Merry merry, all! Here’s a playlist of some Christmas favourites, for the one day a year it’s appropriate.

Probably the best one:

I was expecting this one to be much angrier, somehow:

Utangátta - @SHELFNUNNY (on @HushHushRecords)
hushhushrecords.bandcamp.com/album/utang-tta
Named for an Icelandic term for hopeless dreams, the gentle, ambient-influenced beats of Utangátta manage a sort of musical Rorschach effect, comforting, melancholy or hopeful, depending on your view.

Marble Falls - Shmu (on @macadamtwister)
requiempouruntwister.bandcamp.com/album/pure-bli…
Nimble dream pop from one-man-band Sam Chown. The album borders on prog at times, but Vinyl Williams' production gives it a softer sheen, a glimmering gem of jangling guitars and gently flanged bass.
84/100
Pray - @suunsband
suuns.bandcamp.com/album/fiction-…
That SUUNS' apocalyptic art-pop feels more of-the-moment each year is probably not a great sign. The industrial throb of "PRAY" plays like a hymn from a tomorrow we don't want to visit, and one that's closer than we think.

I think this is about where I'll end up for my year-end playlist. 100 songs from 100 artists, all released in 2020, all of which resonated in one way or another. AM Gold 2020

open.spotify.com/playlist/4cE0n…
Next goal will be writing/saying something about them instead of just listing them.
Plus including the ones that aren't available on Spotify, because it's leaving out some absolute marvels. But, time and all that.
OK. I'll be using this thread to chip away at writing about the 100 artists on this year's AM Gold playlist. FWIW, I've taken the playlist out for a walk a few times this week and I'd highly recommend throwing it on shuffle and taking it outdoors on the next sunny day.

Choose Yer Own fest was one of my favourite #yycarts events ever. A hand-made festival where any event goes. Cardboard robot fight? Breakfast with your grandma? Full re-enactment of the movie Labyrinth? You want it, you make it happen.

Speaking of magical Calgary events, @wreckcityYYC. The first Wreck City was one of the most amazing #yycarts events I've seen. It was packed with families, folks who I never see at installations, exploring this ode to soon-to-be-gone homes. Gentrification, growth & creativity.
My view of this stuff is heavily biased. I work in the arts. I live in a building with multiple governor general's award-winning artists. I am lucky to see a different side of Calgary than most folks. And I'm leaving out a lot of favourites just so this doesn't drag on even more.

This week is @FemmeWave, a fest that, on top of just booking amazing art & music, is also thoughtful and progressive about every aspect of it's organization in a way that puts most North American festivals to shame. (1/x)
This week is also TONTO Week at the @nmc_canada, celebrating one of the most amazing instruments ever built. If it was happening in NYC or London and I read about it, I'd be pulling out my hair in frustration that I couldn't be there.
Next week is GIRAF, an animation festival on par with any in the world. LA only got a dedicated animation fest... last year? We're going on year 14.
