/8 Under this historic trade agreement with the EU – the first based on zero tariffs/quotas EVER agreed by them – 🇬🇧regains control of our laws, borders, money, trade and waters. 🇬🇧 has the political and economic independence on 1 January 21 that was voted for in 2016.
/8 On 1 January 2021, 🇬🇧 leaves the #CFP and becomes an independent coastal state. Something that, from the very start, the EU insisted could NOT happen. They tried to get the status quo tied into the original Withdrawal Agreement – we stood firm against that.
/8 EU 'insisted' on maintaining status quo on #fishing with early calls for a 40-year adjustment period! 5.5 yrs is a huge climb-down for them compared with our opening compromise of 3 yrs. And, in that time, 🇬🇧 will receive a transfer of 25% of quota (15% in first year).
/8 At the end of the adjustment period, 🇬🇧 will be free to seek further increases in quota through annual negotiations to continue delivering prosperity to the sector. Throughout that period, 🇬🇧 Govt will invest in reviving our fishing and coastal communities.
/8 I continue to engage with the fishing industry across 🏴, and I have heard the concerns from some that this deal doesn't go far enough, fast enough. But this is very much a step in the right direction and the opposite of what the EU wanted.
/8 All the SNP have to offer is to give up on what has been gained by this deal and drag the industry right back into the hated #CFP – not to mention all the other powers they want to hand back to Brussels while breaking up 🇬🇧 in the process!
/8 And now we hear that the SNP are not even going to support the deal in Parliament? This means they’d prefer for 🇬🇧 to leave EU WITHOUT a deal!? This really shows the SNP’s hypocrisy and opportunism for what it is – political point scoring rather than what’s best for 🏴.
/8 Farmers and food (including seafood) and drink producers around Scotland have welcomed this deal, as well as the #UKIM Act which protects the integrity of the UK Internal market - more valuable and important to Businesses across 🏴 than the EU.
