TRIVIA TUESDAY - NEW YEARS HISTORY
The federal government including the military, follow the Fiscal Year Calendar (financial year) from 1 October to 30 September. Technically, the first of October is the beginning of the new Fiscal Year and budgets are available for spending.
Traditional New Years celebrations date back 4,000 years to ancient Babylon when it was celebrated in March on the vernal equinox. But that calendar of only 10 months fell out of sync with the sun.
In 46 B.C. Julius Caesar consulted with leading astronomers and mathematicians of his day and introduced the Julian Calendar, adding 90 days and using January 1st as the beginning of the new year.
The Julian Calendar still was not precise enough so in 1582 Pope Gregory, using the prominent mathematicians of his day, instituted the Gregorian Calendar that we use today.
