In 1890 John Langan was freighting for the US Army at Fort Randall when the Massacre at Wounded Knee was inflicted upon defenseless unarmed Minneconjous by the Seventh Calvary
His wagon had been assigned to the Ambulance Corps to
bring back the wounded soldiers, but when he arrived, he viewed the almost total decimation of Minneconjous, including Women & Children
He therefore withdrew his wagon from the Army and helped the few Minneconjou who remained alive to bring their dead & dying to Pine Ridge Agency
At Pine Ridge the Episcopal Mission gave them shelter Dec 29, 1890. The pews were removed and a bed of straw was made for the wounded (This Picture was the original church)
This life changing event led to John giving everything up so he could help Big foots Survivors.
The Lakota where Grateful for Johns' deeds &
it was rumored that Crazy Horse's father gave him a Canupa (Sacred Pipe)
The tribe had numerous Honoring Ceremonies for John
John became a Great Friend to the Tribe & People.
When his Great Grand Daughter shared this story with me
it gave me-a sense of hope that there was good people who did try & also remorseful for the actions of the U.S Army who Massacred so many our our People, just for Vengance from Gen Custer's defeat at Little BIg Horn
Today, Johns g-grand daughter Claudia Neal@neal_cfneal9 is
in the Process of giving the Canupa (Sacred Pipe) to the Red Cloud Heritage Center in Pine Ridge,SD.
Her family is also going to be giving a Scholarship at Red Cloud High School- in Memory of Woundedknee & the Honor of her
G-Grandfather for the selflessness acts he showed.-
"When a person sees a wrong being done to
another-even if the result is that you will lose everything,
always stand up for what is right,
Stand for the Truth
In Memory of those Innocent lives that where taken on Dec 29-1890
May Chief Bigfoots Dreams Always Be In Our Hearts..
