Today, I offer you a few workable tips to assist you in the search for supervisors.
1. Go to the staff page within the department or school website and look up lecturers whose research interests align with yours.
2. Another trick is to use the search bar on the website and type in the key terms of your research or interest. E,g Professor in public health/accounting/English etc. You can then instinctively navigate the page through the results.
3. Sometimes it is difficult to find a supervisor due to the number of academics in a school or department. Another trick to use when faced with this challenge is to locate a Postgraduate Coordinator within the department...
and share your proposal and CV with them to assist you to circulate among academics. This is a quick way to get a supervisor. Please note that different schools refer to such persons differently, Postgraduate Coordinator has just been used as a reference.
I got my supervisor this with the trick in 3.
Remember, when sharing your documents with a PG Coordinator. Make sure your email is succinct with clear messaging about your intent. Your email should not be written as if it is addressed to a prospective supervisor.
Your email to a PG coordinator should highlight:
A. Your qualifications and interest
B. Your desire to study in the school
C. Your request: that you are assisted in the search for a supervisor through the circulation of your documents.
4. Also do your research to find out if an institution has a process of Expressing interest for supervisors. If this is the case, follow the instructions.
Note that you will still be required to provide your research proposal, CV and other supporting documents.
5. When you contact a prospective supervisor, whether asked or not, make sure you attach your Research proposal, CV and academic transcripts.
Please do not attach so many documents. Only attach what is vital.
This VERY long thread will break down the process of writing an SOP using six questions that have worked for me in the several admissions and scholarships I have secured.
Get a drink and let us begin.
Writing an SOP requires thorough research and planning. Writing an SOP involves writing a story of your academic and professional experience.
Remember that volunteering or internship roles also count when you are writing your SOP.
It is important to tell a coherent story from start to finish of your SOP. This allows the assessors to link your passion with your academic and professional trajectory.
It is also very significant that you allow others (mentors, friends, professionals) to review your essays.
WRITING TO A PROSPECTIVE SUPERVISOR AND REQUESTING FOR SUPERVISION
I present to you 7 steps that have worked for me and I hope it helps you.
A thread
1. Have a clear subject line:ย Ensure that the subject line of your email says the reason why you are writing.
For example;ย โRequest for PhD Supervisionโ.ย A bad example of a subject line is:ย โResearch proposal and CVโ.ย This does not tell the prospective supervisor why you are writing.
2. Use of proper names and titles:ย Ensure that your email addresses the academic respectfully and professionally. Also be sure to capture their academic titles if writing for the first time.
