Jabez -the efficacy of prayers

Imagine walking about bearing sorrowful or grieve from his childhood, every mention of his name is a reminder of the pain he caused his mother and a weight he carried on his head. Jabez could have resigned himself to fate and hate his life but he..
..found the way out.
He prayed to God for a change of story, he dared to ask and he received the answer to his request. God is ever willing to answer if we will only pray. Don't give up beloved, lift your voice and ask from the father of light, he will answer you.
There was a man named Jabez who was more distinguished than any of his brothers. His mother named him Jabez because his birth had been so painful.
He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, "Oh, that you would bless me and extend my lands! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!" And God granted him his request.
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

Solomon - The futility of fleshly desires

Whatever your fantasies are, Solomon lived it. He had chariots that were the best in the world, his wisdom was unparalleled, his wealth made a queen faint and he flirted with anything that caught his fancy. And he discovered that they..
.. are all vanities.

Beloved, those material things that you are dying for can't make you happy, your essence is not in things but in God. As Solomon realized, fearing God and keeping his commandments is the duty of man, the foundation of man's happiness. Don't learn it too late
When the queen of Sheba realized how wise Solomon was, and when she saw the palace he had built, she was breathless. She was also amazed at the food on his tables, the organization of his officials and their splendid clothing, the cup-bearers and their robes...

Ruth - Doing the right thing

Being a widow within ten years of marriage can shatter ones dream, she should have been bitter and dejected. Yet, she considered it more pertinent to be a companion to her mother-in-law. Despite her pasts, she kept going, doing one right thing after
another. She ended up being a forbear of the messiah, who could have known!
Beloved, starting over can be really daunting after a terrible experience, but you know what? The story has only just begun, keep moving one step at a time. Your latter is greater than your past.
But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried.

Diotrephes - Leadership the wrong way

I am sure you probably can't remember the name, he took all of 2 verses in scriptures being the definition of bad leadership. His first issue was he loved to be first, then refused to recognize the authority of leaders before him..
.. and starts spreading rumours about them.
Not satisfied, he doesn't welcome other brothers and then stops others from doing same. Beloved, avoid any and all of these attributes, they are unbecoming of a christian.
Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged by God with greater strictness.

I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will have nothing to do with us.

Nehemiah - Political leadership

There is hardly a better example of a godly political leader than Nehemiah. He faced so many political intrigues but yet prevailed. His secrets were
1. Continuous praying while working
2. Fiscal Self discipline - refusing lavish (or any) remuneration
3. Working and fighting, no point stopping to confront detractors and enemies
During this time, none of us—not I, nor my relatives, nor my servants, nor the guards who were with me—ever took off our clothes. We carried our weapons with us at all times, even when we went for water.

Joshua - Taking responsibility

Joshua owned both his successes and especially his mistakes. When Gibeon lied and Joshua believed the evidence before him instead of asking God, he made amends by acknowledging his errors yet honouring his words.
You will not be right all the time, don't excuse yourself rather learn from it. Take responsibility for your actions (errors) and make amends.
So the Israelite leaders examined their bread, but they did not consult the LORD. Then Joshua went ahead and signed a peace treaty with them, the leaders of Israel ratified their agreement with a binding oath.
3 days later, the facts came out –these people of Gibeon lived nearby

Joshua - courage to enter the promised land

A central theme of the old testament is the promise land, promised to Abraham, started by Moses, reminisced by David and the prophets. Yet the actual conquering of Jericho was devoid of human strength.
Joshua parted the Jordan and then walked round the city for seven days and the people shouted.

It takes a lot of courage and obedience to be the leader to make that happen. People wanted action but Joshua offered obedience and he prevailed.
So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days. On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times.
