New:

A federal judge has unsealed her ruling denying Ghislaine Maxwell's second bail request.

Maxwell's latest bid "only solidifies" the judge's view she's a flight risk.

ICYMI: lawandcrime.com/high-profile/j…
Judge Nathan is unimpressed by Maxwell's argument that she would never flee because she is devoted to her husband.

She told authorities that they are getting divorced, and she does not want to live with him before trial, the judge noted.
Judge Nathan notes that Maxwell initially estimated her assets at $3.5 million to pretrial services.

On the second go, she proposed a $28.5 million bail package.

She claimed she couldn't remember her assets at the time, but the judge didn't buy that.
The story at the top of the thread has been updated to include passages from Judge Nathan's unsealed ruling, explaining the denial of Ghislaine Maxwell's second bail application.

Wisconsin Supreme Court’s chief justice denounces threats against her peers.

Context: There have been multiple reports of threats against justices who ruled against Trump, including one he attacked by name and antisemitic abuse against two Jewish justices.
The chief justice was one of the dissenters.

Background on bigoted remarks against Justices Karofsky and Dallet: jta.org/2020/12/17/pol…

NYT interview with Justice Hagedorn: nytimes.com/2020/12/20/us/…
In his NYT interview, Justice Hagedorn described "dark messages"—like being told he should be tried for treason (a capital offense).

He said in another interview that he's "not aware of any specific death threats necessarily," but he has extra police protection.

"Lawyers for Dominion Voting Systems Sent 21 Retraction or Record Preservation Demand Letters This Week — Read Them All Here"

You're going to want to check these out, @lawcrimenews lawandcrime.com/2020-election/… via
A highlight in the stack of letters:

"Instead of retracting the false statements about
Dominion—as detailed in our last letter—Newsmax instead decided to double down on its libel while
simultaneously claiming to 'clarify' its news coverage."

—Dominion counsel on non-retraction
To Lin Wood's purported expert who confused Michigan with Minnesota:

"You have positioned yourself as a leader in the ongoing attacks against Dominion by recklessly promoting long-debunked conspiracy theories that Dominion is somehow responsible for widespread voter fraud."

Not to have someone steal my thunder, but an enterprising data journalist could make a splash with a story tallying how many recipients of Trump's clemency have direct ties to him, his family, or his cronies.

It should be easy enough.

Trump's relatively stingy with pardons.
All it takes is an Excel spreadsheet, a sum function, and a calculator for the percentages.

Just saying.
The internet abhors a vacuum.

It apparently already exists, my readers inform me, quite quickly.

Thanks, all.

Time to crunch @JackLGoldsmith's numbers.

"Breaking the Dam, Trump Grants Clemency to Mueller Convicts, Blackwater Guards and Ex-GOP Congressmen Who Endorsed Him"

DEVELOPING: lawandcrime.com/high-profile/b… via @lawcrimenews
Trump granted full pardons to the FIRST TWO congressmen to endorse him:

* Rep. Chris Collins, who committed his insider trading crime on the White House lawn.

* Rep. Duncan Hunter, the second Trump endorser, had been about to go to federal prison for stealing campaign cash.
Then there are Trump's Mueller cronies and co-stars:

* George Papadopoulos, who lied to the FBI about learning that the Russians had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.

* Lawyer Alex van der Zwaan, who also lied to authorities at Mueller's office.

A conference is about to begin seeking preliminary approval of a $641.2 million settlement over Flint's water crisis.

Statement from Michigan AG @DanaNessel last week:
Judge Judith E. Levy calls the case.

"I have read more briefs than any of us care to recount."

The conference is being held on Zoom, but she says that she would recognize the attorneys' voices even if the feed cut off.
Judge Levy emphasizes that today's proceedings cannot and will not end all litigation: "Let me be clear about this: This is a proposed partial settlement on the litigation."

Proposed edit: “This is false.”

The same sentence applies to both and has the benefit of not lying to users that a “dispute” exists or that “sources” of misinformation have any value.
Think about how many words Twitter has to expend simply to demonstrate a lack of vertebrae.

Three words are all you need.
If it insists on being wordy, try this likewise accurate alternative by YouTube, which surprisingly has shown Twitter up in how to correctly label misinformation.
