Went through my list of books read in 2020. Went on a bit of a Stephen Sears binge at the beginning of the year

Zero regrets. Lincoln's Lieutenants, especially, was excellent
Next was Alan Taylor's take on the War of 1812, which I also really enjoyed. Completed my catching up on his works that I began in 2019.
Dean Snow's work on the Saratoga campaign was a lot of fun, especially give the day-by-day account that he gave, along with archeological evidence being used to support contemporary accounts
Pulled this one off the shelf, where I'd only skimmed it during head school (who has the time to read whole books there?) and I'm very glad I did. Wish more people would read this and understand that the whole north vs south idea of the war is inaccurate
Through the summer, I went through @WWATMD's great summary of maritime raiding operations in the US Navy - paired well with the Patrick O'Brien books I listened to in the car
While Don Troiani does the art for this (and it's of course excellent), the meat of this is Eric Schnitzer's exhaustive research and well-written engagement summaries. Highly recommend.
All I can say is that I NEED the second book of this trilogy to be out ASAP. Atkinson's best - and that's saying a lot
This, by @KeriLeighMerrit, is an in-depth dive into class and race that is broad, deep, and fascinating. Very much recommend for a better understanding of our world
Had some catching up to do and so hit these three towards the end of the year. Really good stuff, all of them, but especially "Army at Dawn"
Finished out the year with @AuthorKRPaul's first novel, which was highly enjoyable! A good way to finish what was an otherwise difficult year

I'm positively delighted that out of the top ten most popular posts published in 2020 on the ASO blog, four are by guest authors!

Number 9 was by @AderMatthew on what leaders can take from reading the great Terry Pratchett: angrystaffofficer.com/2020/07/20/put…
Number 8 was my guide for incoming company commanders (I forgot to add "leave a full-ish bottle of whiskey in your desk drawer for your replacement"):

"Stages of Luke" sorta sounds like something you go through in the grieving process
Gonna dive into the second stage of Luke because ESB is a Christmas movie and I won't hear a word said otherwise Image
Gotta love everyone walking by Han and Leia having arguments in the hallway as if this was all just perfectly normal:

"Just gonna squeeze by here, on my way to the staff update brief, don't mind me, two senior members of this crap shoot having it out, I get it, normal"

As appropriate for the Christmas season, it's time for Star Wars: A New Hope

Someone is not as excited as I am and is already falling asleep
Man, that white interior of the Rebel ship must've been a nightmare to keep clean

Probably had the crew spending all the time cleaning it rather than working on boarding drills

Explains why they couldn't hit anything
Altho the marksmanship thing, not their fault. Obi Wan says it almost right away - "Not as clumsy or random as a blaster"

Energy weapons are all sorta problematic, apparently

Is it even the Christmas season without a full Star Wars rewatch?

Rogue One, tonight. One of the finest war movies ever made.

Just a terrific film all-around, really.
I love that you can see Chopper, the droid from Rebels, in the background on Yavin 4
I still can't believe that K2SO isn't the official mascot for SAMS

@AlanTudyk does such a great job voicing K2SO. Just as he does with everything, really.

Since the Lee monument was FINALLY removed from the Capital today, I thought it would be fun to look back at the moment of national unity in 1910 that brought it there in first pla- oh, wait, no, the opposite happened.

Here's New York's GAR with a WTF and a GH Thomas namedrop
Here's Indiana, New Jersey, South Dakota, Delaware, New Mexico, Kansas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania with a double shotted "aw hell no"
Vermont with a "get lost"

Lol Horatio Gates wanted to invade Canada again in the DEAD OF WINTER in 1778, putting Lafayette in charge - who finally got to Albany in Feb & found a tiny, ill-equipped invasion force. L wrote to GW about the insane plan, the first GW had heard of it. GW then wrote Gates to
Gates was such a moron when it came to field operations. Gawd. What an incompetent buffoon.
Washington, sitting in Valley Forge, freezing his ass off, trying to keep his army together, reading Gates' plans to invade Canada in the winter (again):
