For the 20,000 victims of non-fatal strangulation and suffocation, I urge Parliamentarians to take action now and amend the Domestic Abuse Bill. This needs to be a stand-alone offence. If this opportunity is missed women will die.
#NonFatalStrangulation
Police could much better support victims if there was a stand-alone offence of Non-Fatal Strangulation. 80% of survivors are likely to have a resulting health problem e.g. stroke or PTSD. The Lords should amend the Domestic Abuse Bill to fix this.
#NonFatalStrangulation
Domestic Abuse survivors of Non-Fatal Strangulation are 7 times more likely to be killed by their partner or ex-partner. A new Non-Fatal Strangulation offence would help these victims. I urge those in the House of Lords to support Helen Newlove’s amendment
#NonFatalStrangulation
There is no offence that reflects the risk, harm and fear strangulation I still. Very few perpetrators are prosecuted. The House of Lords should support the amendment to the #DABill to introduce such an offence. Protect victims NOW!
#NonFatalStrangulation
New Zealand as well as many American and Australian states protect victims of Domestic Abuse by having a stand-alone offence of #NonFatalStrangulation. If Parliamentarians do not introduce this offence in the #DABill they will have failed to protect the public.
Most victims of recurrent domestic violence experience #NonFatalStrangulation or suffocation. Survivors of this are 7 times more likely to be killed by their partners/ex-partners. The #DABill in The House of Lords needs amending to protect these victims.
This is a real opportunity to save women’s lives by amending the #DABill in the House of Lords to introduce a new offence of #NonFatalStrangulation. I urge the Lords to do so - this affects 20,000 women each year and they deserve better.
The House of Lords can save lives by introducing a new offence of #NonFatalStrangulation.
Support @baronessnewlove amendment
Too often the police responses to a #NonFatalStrangulation or suffocation is a tick on a risk assessment. Far too few cases are prosecuted. The House of Lords should amend the #DABill to better protect these victims
I was regularly strangled, the first time I was 7 months pregnant. The last time I was strangled my perp was charged with ‘common assault’.
Six weeks later he burst into my place of work and shot me with a sawn-off shot gun.
