Absolutely devastating. This was a cataclysmic failure of government from the top-down.
"it now appears Russia exploited multiple layers of the supply chain to gain access to as many as 250 [government] networks." nytimes.com/2021/01/02/us/…
"SolarWinds moved much of its engineering to satellite offices in the Czech Republic, Poland and Belarus, where engineers had broad access to the Orion network management software that Russia’s agents compromised."
Those saying that Trump or the government "allowed this to happen" either don't understand how the hacks happened or want to deliberately ignore the evidence.
The main problem is that the US has been WAY behind other countries in cybersecurity spending.
When we do spend, it has historically been too focused on specific issues i.e. election security. There has to be a massive shift in how we protect other critical infrastructure and government intelligence.
Of course, it doesn't help that Trump has never once called out Putin and that almost all of his inner circle has worked for Russian oligarchs/alongside Russian spies. Part of the problem is appeasement. This is what happens when the threat of Russian cyber espionage is ignored.

NEW: A person directly familiar with the situation tells me that investigators in New York have questioned at least one witness about Rudy Giuliani’s work with Ukrainian oligarch Pavel Fuks as part of their criminal investigation into Trump’s personal attorney.
The probe into Giuliani is not only active but intensifying as investigators have asked detailed, substantive questions about Giuliani’s lobbying and his payments from various Ukrainian sources, including Fuks.
SDNY investigators have a copy of a contract between Fuks and Giuliani’s security firm in 2017. The work extended into 2018.
Maybe there wouldn’t be as much of a disinformation crisis in this country if the media didn’t spend its time screeching about every conspiracy theory.
Something has fundamentally broken in the media. The sensationalism and profit hungry, click-driven corporations are broken.
The sensationalism in corporate media is what pisses me off. No Ted Cruz isn’t committing treason. It’s a stupid publicity stunt that doesn’t matter in any tangible way. Stop covering it like it has an impact on anything!
People can’t pay rent. The world is boiling. Espionage is hitting a crisis point. Major banks are laundering billions of dollars of dirty money to corrupt our politics and business. Maybe these things should be covered?

NEW: I can report that NSO Group's "US branch" Westbridge Technologies received loans worth up to $265,000,000 from Credit Suisse's Cayman Islands branch. NSO has repeatedly sworn in court that they had no US operations.
Westbridge Technologies and OSY Technologies (both in the NSO Group of companies) were co-borrowers on the loans.
What's more: SEC filings show that Westbridge Technologies had $30,000,000 under management with an alternative investment manager. This indicates that Westbridge did indeed draw down on the loan and had significant capital in the US.
