This is a thread to keep track of all books I started reading. Not the ones I read. Will note why I started. Whether I finished. Why I gave up. Why I finished. What I loved. Starting with the ones I am reading currently. I often wonder about these things and can’t recollect why
Recommended by @shawnachor in The Happiness Advantage. Loved that book so got intrigued. Convinced by the reviews and the volume of research done by the two writers to put this together. Also happened to be reading the Instagram book and was primed to know more about networks. Image
I am a United fan so isn’t surprising I bought it. But it’s been lying around for years. I never bothered because I thought I knew everything already. I finally decided to read this after I finished reading 3 books on Brian Clough. More interested to read about the Aberdeen years Image
Has been lying around for almost 5 years. Bought a used copy on Amazon.com. I think that I have a good sense of humour and that’s why this got my attention in the first place. I started writing last year. So started reading in the hope of adding humour to my writing. Image
My first attempt at studying finance in b-school was a major disaster. I almost had to stay for another year. Stayed away for 17 years, but now my job demands better understanding of finance. Recommended by my colleague Aakrosh who’s a whiz. Hoping for better luck with this time Image
Reading almost out of guilt. Someone asked why I don’t read books about Indian entrepreneurs. Discovered this on Twitter (excerpts from the quotes by Sanjiv B and Anupam M got me hooked). Read the free kindle chapter on Naukri and totally loved it. Image
Was fascinated by Socratic Questioning (read about it in The Serendipity Mindset). Then found this in the recommended list by the @NextBigIdeaClub. Loved the free kindle chapters about Socrates and Marcus Aurelius. Hoping it’s a simple easy book to start reading philosophy Image
How Europe raced past everyone is a subject I am obsessed with. The use of gunpowder is supposed to be a key hypothesis. I was researching for books on that topic and found this one.The free kindle chapter was amazing. The best argument that I have read about the decline of China Image
Recommended by Amazon. Tempted because it was specifically about using behavioural biases in marketing/advertising.Have read tonnes of behavioural science but hardly managed to use any of it. Expensive so shortlisted and waited. Futile. So bought and immediately started reading. Image
Finished this one. Totally worth a read. Some great stories in there. My favourite is Sanjiv Bhikchandani and Naukri. Thanks for writing this @sidharthrao. Here’s my goodreads review. goodreads.com/review/show/37…
First book to get dropped in 2021. Gave up after 4 chapters. Quite a drag. No interesting ideas to get better at humour. Sorry folks who might have picked it up @kyabakteho @a_confused_desi #droppedbooksof2021
Don’t remember how I discovered but was immediately interested. Was a must read after chapter 1 where I read the elevator example . The only thing holding me back was the 2500 price. Heard 3 chapters on audible. Difficult to absorb on audio so ordered 😊 Image
Finished this one. So glad I finally did. Whatever your industry, you will find lots of actionable behaviour science ideas. As good as advertised. Thanks @rshotton for writing this. Here’s my goodreads review goodreads.com/review/show/25… #bestbooksof2021
First started in 2016 when it came out but read only 20 pages. Applying more behavioural science at work is one of my 2021 goals. So reading lots of books. This is one of them. To borrow a term from the field, I am primed by @RobertCialdini’s incredible first book #Influence. Image
Starting this book is like an uncontrollable impulse purchase. I have this thing for espionage. Noticed this on Amazon today and I literally dropped everything. Looks very similar to The Spy and The Traitor which I loved. Image
I will always love Man United and worship Sir Alex. But this bio is becoming the second book to be dropped in 2021.I was hoping to know more about the making of the man and the Aberdeen years and the book disappoints. Already know all the United stories.Have read better footy bios
Now totally hooked. Found this as I searched for another spy book after Billion Dollar Spy. Kim Philby is the most famous double agent in the history of British espionage and I have always wanted to read about him. I trust Ben McIntyre to tell Philby’s story really well. Image
Abhishek Da (@ovshake42) & Arunabha Da (@senantix) are my college seniors and the most knowledgeable cricket people I know. This is an interesting unexplored topic. Looking forward to some great research and interesting takes. Picked and started this as soon as it was released. Image
Finished it in two days and totally loved it. Loved the parts about how spying evolved and innovated and stories of the men and women who ran the Moscow station of CIA. Hungry for more 😀. Here’s my goodreads review goodreads.com/review/show/37… Awesome book by @thedeadhandbook
Was recommended @patricklencioni’s video about this book in a course that I am doing.I loved it so much that I decided to immediately start reading the book. If you manage a team you should see the video. You might be tempted to read the book like I was 😀 Image
Finished this pretty quickly.Totally loved it.Especially all the segues into fascinating cricket trivia and analysis. This book is like a marathon cricket adda between @ovshake42 and @senantix and I hope they have many more. My fairly long goodreads review goodreads.com/review/show/38…
Given the popularity of tennis in India, it’s quite surprising we didn’t have a good book on the history of Indian tennis.Till @Cric_Writer filled the void. Having waited for so long I couldn’t help but start immediately. Just 2 chapters in and I’m impressed by the research 💯 Image
There are hardly any good books about French football. Atleast not in English. Given their success I have been super curious to know more. Then I came across this one by @mattspiro and read the free kindle sample. It was so fascinating that I had to start reading. Image
Finished. Really enjoyed it. Consider myself an Indian tennis fan expert & I would have failed a quiz based on this book. Anindya @Cric_Writer has done an incredible job with amazing support from the tennis community. Full of great stories. My review goodreads.com/review/show/38…
I want to read more about Indian businesses this year. @ShivShivakumar’s new book was an obvious choice given his legend - professional achievements, anecdotes from people who’ve worked with him and his posts on LinkedIn. Had preordered. Arrived today. Dived right in. Image
Finished this and totally loved it. Finally a great book on French football and it’s role and impact on French society. On par with some of the best books about football in a country. Also a mini bio of Kylian Mbappe. Thanks @mattspiro. My detailed review.goodreads.com/review/show/37…
Ben McIntyre does an excellent job with the fascinating story of Kim Philby. I have had so many questions about him and thanks to this book many of them are now answered. You will marvel at how he managed his double life and fooled everyone. My review goodreads.com/review/show/37…
Understanding how the West rose and why the East fell is a topic of never ending interest for me. This book by @nfergus literally tries to answer that exact question. Been wanting to read this for a while. Finally getting started after finishing a couple of others. Image
Another @stevenbjohnson book on the history of innovation and another case of reading the free kindle chapter and getting hooked. So good that I have to read it now. This one traces how objects of play and recreation have played a central role in many important innovations. Image
Finished it.Incredible book to understand fundamentals of the balance sheet, the cash flow statement & all ratios to check the financial health of a business.Lots of examples to explain the concepts. Wish I had this book in bschool. @anillamba03 🙏. Review goodreads.com/review/show/37…
An awesome book which addresses a messy issue for all leaders - a dysfunctional team.Have read many teambuilding books. This is the best. A precise diagnosis identifying 5 dysfunctions, steps to fix them & a fable to explain. @patricklencioni 🙏. Review goodreads.com/review/show/38…
Been so busy reading this that forgot to post. @AdamMGrant is one of my favourite writers. So pre-ordered & started his new book immediately. 4 chapters in and totally loving it. Shared notes with someone who walked to a bookstore and bought. Couldn’t wait for Amazon. That good. ImageImageImageImage
Glad I finally read it.Not in the same league as “Influence” but still an excellent book.Lots of takeaways if you work in consumer biz. Incl what influence works at what stage of the consumer journey.Very useful for categories like jewellery. My review goodreads.com/review/show/18…
Have wanted to read this book since I heard @mattwridley @naval discuss it on Naval’s podcast. For 2 episodes 😀.Unique takes on innovation incl the diff between invention & innovation.Started after finishing another book today. Was a time I thought Ridley was a biology guy 🙈 Image
Kind of disappointing ☹️. Read the chapters that were most relevant for me and it didn’t offer anything. So dropped it.A bit of an anachronism in today’s day and age. More useful for people who want to have the same career path like the writer. My review goodreads.com/review/show/38…
An incredible book. Full of wisdom & practical insights. Its message - live, think & learn like a scientist with intellectual humility & curiosity. In an age where social likes boost your ego, this book will make you reflect. My humble review 🙏@AdamMGrant goodreads.com/review/show/38…
I am fully in the studying Indian businesses and understanding finance mode these days. Work requirement. Then I saw Saurabh Mukherjea’s video about Asian Paints and my curiosity was piqued. Started the book as soon as I finished #ThinkAgain today. Image
I found out about this book and this part of our history just day before yesterday. If this doesn’t intrigue an Indian to find out what happened, then nothing ever will I think. I am doing that thanks to Amazon. To debate well we need to know more about our history 🙏🙏@iProbal Image
Most of us know how Redbus empowered small time bus operators by providing them a software to manage all their ticketing ops. Didn’t know that Marico was already doing this way back in time. Thanks to this book,I know one more reason how @hcmariwala built such an awesome company ImageImage
In addition to customers and employees, there are also other partners - distributors, dealers, vendors etc. Some nice lessons on how they become important assets for a company. ImageImageImage
Someone I know spoke very passionately about inequality & social justice and recommended 2 books. This one and Michael Sandel’s Justice. Realised my own shallow understanding so decided to read one. Humankind was also in the consideration. Went with the thinnest one. Seriously 😀 Image
Finished. My understanding of how the west came to dominate and conquer the rest of the world improved with this book. Seeking recommendations for more books. The information is good but many of the inferences are weak and biased. Still 3 ⭐️.My full review goodreads.com/review/show/36…
Another useful lesson and some nice examples. About what makes HDFC Bank great. It’s not the technology per se which gives you the power. It’s how you use it. ImageImageImageImage
7 Indian companies which have been consistently brilliant on growth and profitability.Lots of finance but also best practises & stories.Of innovation, brand building, partnerships and long term strategies. Not very detailed. I was inspired by the end. goodreads.com/review/show/39…
I wanted to read a book which didn’t require note taking 😀. So picked up a sports book. Have been wanting to read this Boca Juniors book for a while. And it’s because of Riquelme and not Maradona. He remains this enigmatic genius who played in the most beautifully romantic way. Image
Finished this wonderful book. Not great but still very good. Part 1 has stories of innovation. From farming to cars to computers. Very informative. In part 2, @mattwridley covers key topics about innovation. Like how patents destroy innovation. My review goodreads.com/review/show/39…
My distracted impulsive state of mind. I was reading the Boca book and noticed this other book in the Kindle library and started reading this other one instead. And now I can’t stop. The story of a football fan who lives in Argentina and savours all the great football around. Image
AJ Lafley and Roger Martin keep popping up all over the place. This book has been sitting there for a long long time. There was another Lafley mention as I was finishing “How Innovation Works”. That was the last nudge that I need to finally start reading this book. Image
I am a huge fan of @Gladwell and I had to read his new book as soon as it came out. Image
Finished this wonderful football travelogue through South America. I want to now go to South America, live there, hangout with the fans and try and see all the derbies/Classicos.Wanted to do that in England earlier but this book changed my plans. My review goodreads.com/review/show/39…
Read and loved Panipat by Vishwas Patil last year. Have wanted to read @MulaMutha ( Uday Kulkarni’s) books since then. Starting with Baji Rao. There are so many good history books about the Marathas and some good people are translating it for readers like me 🙏😊. Image
History is fully on my mind. After China, its time for Bangladesh and Pakistan. Have wanted to read this for a long long time. These books by journalists using declassified material are always good. Image
Have been a Rory Sutherland fan for a while. Gifted his book to others but hadn’t read it myself 🙈🙈. Busy with all the other stuff. Then lots of Rory references last week. As if it was a sign. So finally picked it up 😀. @rorysutherland Image
Finished this useful book about the history of Boca Juniors. Not great but good. This book has made me a Boca fan though. Someday I really want to go and see a derby in La Bombonera. The passion is insane. My review goodreads.com/review/show/37…
Late update. This is one of those books you finish quickly. Really interesting story about WW2. Never knew about this. Two unique men representing two unique philosophies. With an interesting ending. Another @Gladwell book worth reading. My longish review goodreads.com/review/show/38…
Finished this unputdownable book. The real story of the Bangladesh war. Gary Bass does a tremendous job telling this story in its full intricate detail. Realpolitik at its best and worst. The best part is that the writer is not taking sides. Spares no one. goodreads.com/review/show/32…
If you have the slightest interest in Indian history, read this book. It’s superb.Baji Rao is one of India’s greatest commanders who has so far never been given his due.The stupid movie is an insult. This book does justice to his achievements. @MulaMutha 🙏🙏goodreads.com/review/show/40…
Starting another book I bought years ago. Necessitated by a course I am doing. It’s also made me more optimistic that some day I will read many of the unread books lying around 😀. Kim Scott wrote another book by the time I could finish the first one. Image
Finished this incredible book. There are so many great books on psychology but this is one of the best at teaching you how to apply it in marketing/business/product. Coz it’s written by an advertising guy. Gifted 9 copies already. goodreads.com/review/show/37… @rorysutherland
Finished this very important book about the battles of Nathu La and Cho La. This book along with Himalayan Blunder by Brig Dalvi tell the full story of border conflicts with China. This book made me sad and hopeful. @iProbal Read the review to know why goodreads.com/review/show/39…
I had pre-ordered it and it’s finally arrived. I have listened to Kahneman talk about this on 3 podcasts already. Love the way he speaks. Started this. Image
I have been very interested in knowing more about Xiaomi. Given their growth and their unique marketing models. So was keen to read this book by @therealjpk when I heard about it. Got fast tracked on my reading list when @SunOfGan gifted me a copy 🙏. Image
Finished the Xiaomi book. So starting a new one. I call myself a Senna widow. So bought this when I discovered it. Been waiting to start for a while. I am an old school F1 fan. This rivalry is something which matters to me. Image
I believe in innovation and capitalism. But this book taught me important lessons about justice and equality.About the powerful people who cause growing inequality are actually trying to gain control over the fight against it under the guise of innovation. goodreads.com/review/show/35…
Finished this in one long sitting. The subject matter is fascinating and this book reads well. It’s not the greatest biography of a company but it’s still quite good and worth a read. Will learn a lot about Xiaomi’s story. goodreads.com/review/show/40…
Wanted to read this since the day Milkha Singh died. Got it today. Luckily finished the Prost Senna book, so starting this one right away. I have been disappointed by the bios of some legendary Indian sporting greats. Hoping for better 🤞 Image
Very good book about the rivalry between the 2 great drivers & history of the sport from mid 70’s to 1994. Unfortunately, there is more to read & understand about Prost and less about Senna. A little biased against the Brazilian. But still worth a read. goodreads.com/review/show/40…
In a sports frame of mind. Yesterday Amazon recommended Ramchandra Guha’s latest cricket book and I couldn’t help myself. Thanks to prime, I started reading it today. Love him as a cricket fan and a writer. This memoir combines both. Loving it so far Image
Good book. Honest and simple autobiography of a great man. Speaks from the heart. Unlike many others, you never feel he’s making up things retrospectively to make himself look good. goodreads.com/review/show/40…
I keep coming across this book every now and then. Recently read an interesting medium post which referred to some of the techniques discussed in this book. So finally went ahead and got it. Starting it now, having finished the Guha and Milkha books. Image
@Ram_Guha is probably the best person to write the memoir of an old school cricket fan. This book confirms that.I loved the chapter about Pakistani cricketers. So much so that I bought Javed Miandad’s out of print biography for a ridiculous amount of money. goodreads.com/review/show/40…
I bought this book in 2014 but never got to read it. Ramchandra Guha mentions it in his book and that made me pick it up. I have a serious cricket fever right now. I am acting completely irrationally. This book will either cure me or make it worse Image
This is the most expensive book I have ever purchased. It’s not even new. It’s about a cricketer I have hated and begrudgingly admired. I had to read it after reading about it in Guha’s book. So started as soon as I could finish Pundits from Pakistan. Image
Incredible book. Funny, honest and beautifully written. One of the best cricket books I have read period. Made me fall in love with Pakistan cricket all over again. I have major Pakistan cricket fever now. Ordered 2 more books on Pakistan cricket. goodreads.com/book/show/1962…
Finished this awesome book. One of the best books on building great teams. Debunks the great myth that results and accountability don’t go with caring for your people. They are in fact perfect for each other. Full of great practical advice goodreads.com/review/show/20…
I read Peter Oborne’s excellent history of Pakistan cricket and assumed there was no point reading @OsmanSamiuddin’s book. Having read his wonderful writing over the years, I have been tempted a few times. The 2 Pakistan cricket books finally pushed me to read it. Image
@MulaMutha Uday Kulkarni’s new pre-ordered book has arrived and I am starting it right away. The work of the Maratha historians is incredible and I wish we had similar books available for other parts of Indian history. Image
Finished the two cricket books. So starting another eagerly awaited book. The story of Marico ( one of my favourite companies) as told by @hcmariwala himself. Interesting cover. Image
ImageImageImageImage
ImageImageImageImage
Finished it and kinda liked it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I had an ambivalent relationship with Miandad. Hated and admired him at the same time. This book finally helped me make sense of him. The man, his mind and his complex relationship with Imran goodreads.com/book/show/1632…
Finished the Marico book. So starting a new one. Lots of pending reviews. This one was recommended by the @NextBigIdeaClub. Heard author @gilliantett speak about it on @AdamMGrant’s podcast and I had to read it. Never knew anthropology was so fascinating. Image
Finished a few. So started two new books today. Lots of pending reviews of books I have finished. This one was high on my to read list for a while. I saw a tweet by Vijay Shekhar Sharma today about this book today. That made me go for it. Gifted by @SunOfGan 🙏🙏. Image
2nd one is a New book on Barca( football club).Reason for impulse to read it immediately ( its expensive & above the price I am usually willing to pay ) is @KuperSimon. Have loved all the football books he’s written earlier. Read the kindle chapter while I wait for it to arrive. Image
Was strongly recommended by someone on an Instagram book post. I read the free kindle chapter. I thought I knew about all the scientific inventions and discoveries that happened in ancient India. That one chapter made me realise my ignorance. So I had to read it. Image
Excellent book by @KuperSimon. He’s got incredible access to people at the football club and he uses that brilliantly in this amazing book. He tells wonderful stories and offers new insights about Cryuff, Guardiola and Messi. goodreads.com/review/show/42…
I am very interested in understanding how people come up with ideas and insights. So was intrigued by this book. The free kindle chapter was interesting. Have decided to read it along with Edward DeBono’s book on lateral thinking. @KleInsight Image
Feel relieved that I have finally read this super popular book.I also know why it’s so popular. Most finance books are written like economics books.Assuming we are rational all the time. This one is written for humans who are fallible to biases about money. goodreads.com/review/show/42…
So glad I read this.Anthropology is really cool.Very important if you are looking for deep insights about why people do what they do.Gillian Tett has written a wonderful book. Explains the concepts in brief and then a bunch of examples to show application. goodreads.com/review/show/40…
This is a wonderful book because it’s very honest. @hcmariwala shares his missteps and wrong decisions also.He shares enough detail that you can learn from it.Although you are left hungry for a little more. As good as any biographical book about a company. goodreads.com/review/show/41…
After reading this I realised that a book by an insider, someone who lived through the experience, always offers a special insight. Oborne’s book is well researched, @OsmanSamiuddin lays bare the soul & psyche of Pakistan cricket & all its protagonists. goodreads.com/review/show/41…
I gushed to someone about Anthro Vision. He recommended and then gifted me this book - The Culture Code by Clotaire Rapaille. Funny that it had been sitting in my wishlist for 5 years. Took it as a sign that it was time to read it. Image
Finally ordered this book after having read @ShaneAParrish and @farnamstreet for all my real learning life. It’s a nice reference book to have around. Reading and revising everything. One principle every few days. Image
My favourite example from this book. How Nestle used the author’s insights to create a favourable emotion for coffee and build a big business in Japan. ImageImageImage
This is a wonderful book about understanding how different cultures see the same things differently and how that understanding can be put to use by marketers.Lots of examples. Good explanation of the process of discovery of insight and how our brain works.goodreads.com/review/show/22…
This book will blow your mind away. When you discover the breadth of the scientific discoveries made by the ancient Hindu civilisation. Don’t get caught up in the word Hindu. This is small start to do what Joseph Needham did for China. Long review. goodreads.com/review/show/42…
Wanted to read a sports book after two intense books but it’s taking forever for the Lakers and the Patriots books to come. So ordered this one about the Philadelphia 76ers and The Process. Arrived in a day and I read a 100 pages already. It’s a fascinating story well told. Image
Finished the Philly book in two days. Restarted the Maratha book. And now the Lakers book has arrived. Spoilt for choice. But I have to start this. Have already read and heard so much. Hoping that this book will tell me more. Image
Great teams either have a great system which allows them to be greater than the sum of their parts or have a bunch of superstars.Pep Guardiola’s Barca side was unique in combining these two philosophies.A brilliant system which also got the best out of their individual talent 1/n
How did Pep manage it ? What was the system. I found it in Simon Kuper’s book. Sharing the screenshots. 2/n ImageImageImageImage
3/n ImageImageImageImage
Am I correct in thinking that almost all the great Maratha leaders died young. Shivaji @ 50, Baji Rao @ 40, Nanasaheb Peshwa @ 41, MadhavRao @ 28, Chimaji @ 34. Nobody on the battlefield. Their contemporaries seem to live longer. Wondering what if they all lived to 60? @MulaMutha
