The Battle of Iwo Jima was a major battle in which the United States Marine Corps and Navy landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) during World War II.
The five-week battle saw some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the Pacific War.
Approximately 70,000 U.S. Marines and 18,000 Japanese soldiers took part in the battle. In thirty-six days of fighting on the island, nearly 7,000 U.S. Marines were killed.

Do you guys have any relatives who were there? I'd love to see them and hear more about them.

I'm fascinated by this mummified pup who lived and died in Siberia 18,000+ years ago since I saw it for the first time. He still had his milk teeth (!!!!!) when he died.
His DNA is under analysis to determine whether he was a dog or a wolf.
