H.R. 1 (the For the People Act) has been introduced in the House. This would be a massive step toward finally, for the first time, establishing a democracy in this country that works by, for, and of the people. 🧵
The For the People Act is a monumental package of democracy reforms that will center voters by dismantling the system that allows big money to call the shots in politics.

Our democracy has been rigged in favor of white people and the wealthy from the jump.
And huge corporations and special interests have only entrenched their power over the years, paying big money to influence the outcome of our elections and support legislators who will protect them from accountability.
Those same legislators have returned the favor by making it almost impossible for the people -- mostly Black people and people of color -- to vote or otherwise have a say in our democracy.
For 2 years since the For the People Act was first introduced, Indivisibles have been making calls, writing letters & visiting their representatives to demand they pass structural democracy reform legislation. Today’s introduction of H.R. 1 shows 1 thing: their voices were heard.
The House has shown they are ready to fight for a truly inclusive and healthy democracy. The Senate must now follow suit and move this legislation forward.

🧵 Yesterday, DC Rep. @EleanorNorton introduced the DC Statehood Bill with a record 202 original co-sponsors. This, along with the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, are the cornerstones for necessary democracy reform.
American democracy is built on the promise that all people should have a say in our federal government through elected representatives.

However, that is not the case for the 700,000 Americans who live in DC: indivisible.org/resource/makin…
Unlike citizens who live in one of America’s 50 states, DC residents lack:

❌ Voting representation in the House
❌ Any representation in the Senate

Senate Republicans' bogus confirmation hearing for Amy Coney Barrett begins today.

Filling a Supreme Court vacancy this close to an election is unprecedented.

Trying to rush through the process despite a COVID-19 outbreak shows the GOP's desperation. savescotus.indivisible.org
The GOP is prioritizing a political power grab over pandemic relief.

Republicans who were exposed to COVID at the superspreader event that was Barrett’s announcement ceremony are even refusing to get tested or quarantine, putting lives at risk just to avoid delaying the hearing.
Amy Coney Barrett is a direct threat to Ruth Bader Ginsburg's legacy.

She has consistently demonstrated her right-wing extremism throughout her career.

She would uphold Trump’s agenda for decades to come if confirmed.

She is a conservative’s dream to fill RBG’s seat.

We knew that Donald Trump's pick to fill the Supreme Court vacancy would be bad -- especially under these circumstances -- but Amy Coney Barrett is a truly horrifying pick.

Judge Barrett is a conservative’s dream to fill RBG’s seat.
Let us explain why. 👇
She's heavily criticized Roe v. Wade -- calling the landmark ruling "a framework of abortion on demand" -- and made clear that she will ignore precedent and overturn laws as she sees fit. She's attacked efforts to ensure access to contraception as an assault on religious liberty.
She's openly opposed the Affordable Care Act, critiquing the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the individual mandate. Another ACA case is scheduled to begin just one week after November’s election. Confirming Coney Barrett would be an insurmountable barrier to the ACA's future.

#BreonnaTaylor was murdered. Hard stop. And this is not justice. She should be alive today, and her killers should have been fired and prosecuted for her murder. The lack of accountability is staggering. Breonna Taylor and her family deserve so much more than this. #SayHerName
This ongoing violence by law enforcement is systemic. It isn't a question of good vs. bad cops -- it is an indictment of the entire institution. We are beyond the point of police reform.
It's simply not enough to discuss a need for more bias training or body cameras. We must demand transformative change. We must defund the police and reinvest in community services to keep everyone safe. indivisible.org/defund-police-…

Trump will announce his Supreme Court nominee on Saturday so we wanted to give you a preview of one judge that's on his shortlist. Let’s talk about Amy Coney Barrett. This is a big deal. If Barrett is confirmed the Court will work to preserve the Trump agenda for decades to come.
We already know what kind of justice Amy Coney Barrett will be. Trump himself has laid out a litmus test for all of his judicial nominees.

1⃣Trump only wants judges who will overturn Roe v. Wade

2⃣Trump has made clear that he is seeking a justice hostile to the ACA
Those aren’t the only reasons Amy Coney Barrett would be dangerous as a Supreme Court justice. Barrett’s confirmation would threaten these hard-won advances for LGBTQ equality, and will pose a threat to future fights. nwlc.org/wp-content/upl…

URGENT: @MittRomney has sided with Trump & McConnell to move forward with consideration of a Supreme Court nominee to replace RBG. This situation is moving quickly but we wanted to give an update on where we are now.
We're moving forward as planned:
📣 Friday we're urging folks to show up to their Senator's district offices and make their voices heard.
☎️ Saturday we need people phonebanking to help us flip the Senate, which is now more important than ever.

We have not lost this fight yet.

Read that again. We have not lost this fight yet.

We plan to keep going until all the votes have been cast. All this means is that the nomination will go forward, but it's not yet guaranteed that the nominee will actually be confirmed.
