There are some stresses & strains becoming evident in the new Irish Sea border arrangements. Firstly NI hauliers are avoiding Dublin port where they can because NI-GB via Dublin now requires customs processes.
So the boats leaving Belfast & Larne are basically full while Dublin-Holyhead is much quieter. It would help if the TSS could interface with Irish Revenue systems but that’s not possible at the moment.
There are still issues with GB suppliers not being on top of what is now required to ship to NI, particularly SPS, which is leading to delays at various points in the supply chain. This includes NI trailers facing delays to clear Dublin port.
These delays can have a ripple effect: if drivers are over their time then they & their trailers get stuck somewhere they shouldn’t be. Not a massive problem yet but could be.
Groupage (one haulier picking up loads from multiple customers) is still a headmelt. Some significant operators think there still isn’t a workable procedure for doing this for SPS goods going GB-NI.
For hauliers dealing with GB pick ups options are to refuse to lift non-compliant loads or else lift them & hope the issues can be sorted out reasonably quickly at the sea border. Border officials in NI are helping with this but this light touch approach is due to end on Fri.
There is a constant round of calls going on across London, Dublin & Belfast in an attempt to stay on top of this.
The @CommonsNIAC will be hearing about some this tomorrow morning. Sinn Féin have also called for urgent meeting of Stormont’s Agri Ctte this week.

Why are you seeing Spar products in Sainsbury’s in NI? It’s post Brexit contingency planning in operation.
RECAP: As of 31 December NI is still in the EU’s single market for goods; GB is not. This means onerous new rules for moving food products from GB-NI. So supermarkets have been making plans, trying to source more in NI or Ireland.
Sainsbury’s have a contract with Henderson Group. They’re a £bn NI-based wholesaler. But they wholesale to a network of Spar & Vivo stores.

Temporary facilities in NI to do physical checks from 1 Jan
‘80 - 100% certain’ we can stand arrangements up on 1 Jan but it ‘wouldn’t be pretty.’
Larne & Belfast will be staffed 24/7 for SPS checks. The temporary checking facilities for January aren’t all in one place & there aren’t enough bays for every lorry to be checked as it arrives. May be queues (this is the scenario without derogations)

You know the Export Health Certificate thing? That piece of paperwork that will keep food products flowing from GB to NI & the EU? What if there’s not enough vets & other professionals to provide the certs? The food & logistics industry thinks this could be the case.
They’ve written to DEFRA about this, warning this issue on its own could lead to a reduction of between 50 & 75% in the volume of GB food trade to the EU (especially to Ireland and Northern Ireland) in the months after the 1st January.
The number of qualified Official Veterinarians has increased from c.600 in July 2019 to c.1200 in September 2020, but there is no clarity on how many of these vets, will actually be employed in meeting the estimated ten-fold increase in demand for EHCs.
