A lot of indie developers are in a tough place right now, because it's entirely possible to do everything right and still have a commercial failure on your hands. There is no end of absolute indie gems coming out month after month and many are going to fall through the cracks.
From my own perspective as an avid indie fan over the past decade, it feels like we've gone from a situation where I could easily play all the notable indie titles out there; Bastion, Dust, Gunpoint, FTL, Mark it the Ninja, etc
It was easy to keep on top of and follow.
Now, however? It's a completely different kettle of fish, and even someone like me who plays a lot of games, I'm completely overwhelmed at the best of times. I'm genuinely not exaggerating when I say that even whole subgenres are feeling completely oversaturated.
Take a look at just how many retro FPS titles there are in the last couple of years. Or metroidvanias. Or roguelikes. Niche upon niche is being oversaturated, and not by rubbish, but some very genuinely amazing games. Look at how many turn based tactics games came out last year?
I remember playing the demo for Fae Tactics earlier in the year, and absolutely adoring it, but then I had to skip over it when the full game came out, because I just had so much to play as it was. I still have t gotten around to playing it either.
Likewise a game I did enjoy a lot, Wintermoor Tactics Club, sailed under so many people's radar. Great game, deserves so much better.
I try my best to play, talk about, and stream what I can. But I'm just one person, I can only do so much to highlight a lot of games that I love. It's why I put so much effort into keeping my curator page up to date.
Even with games I recommend, it depends on luck? So many folks told me they picked up Mechanicus or Disco Elysium because of me, but other games I gush about don't seem to get anywhere near the attention.
By the way, this is exactly why I was so happy to see Ikenfell get a nod in the Jimquisition game of the year video. It looks like an excellent game by all rights, and sadly not one I had the time to play myself, but glad to see it get some recognition.
I try and do my best with the platform that I have, but that doesn't mean reaching across the aisle and trying to deradicalize or otherwise convert right wingers, that's never been my focus and I don't think I ever will.
It still kinda messes with me that I'm considered by some folks a "big leftist" account, when all I really do is speak about my perspective as a trans woman while doing regular videosgame influencer stuff and talking about things I like. I'm not and haven't been an activist.
Being openly and unapologetically queer and trans while gaming, and making LGBT people expressly welcome in my spaces and community, that's more important to me than the potential to reach someone on the other side. Maybe that not much in the grand scheme of things, but I try.
God, I wish half as many people would show up for my twitch streams as RT my threads on trans issues. I'm not gonna lie that it can be disheartening.
I want to make it clear that I'm not admonishing anyone for not coming by for my streams. I'm just lamenting that the thing that quite honestly brings me a lot of joy, just isn't anywhere near as popular as when I'm speaking on topics of despair that frankly distress me.
I try very hard to make my streams a place where folks can come to relax and chill, I've made a channel that's an explicitly LGBT friendly place, and it's something I have a lot of passion for.
The transphobia crisis in the UK mirrors in a lot of ways Prop 8 in California over a decade ago. There was a concerted effort by the religious right to ban same sex marriage in what is one of the most progressive states, and saw huge amounts of out of state money pouring in...
The logic was, that if the religious right could prove that even a progressive state rejects marriage equality, that it would deal a deadly blow to LGBT rights and kill off the growing momentum for marriage equality. It passed in 2008, and California banned same sex marriage.
It was deemed unconstitutional and overturned eventually, and in the end marriage equality won out in 2015. But I don't think it can be overstated just how intense the culture of homophobia got during the Prop 8 era, it was absolutely vile and shocking and extremely dehumanising.
Well, that's an oversimplification. They most certain are a hate group, and act the same as any other anti-LGBT hate group, but more than that, they're something more sinister: They are controlled opposition. And that's considerably worse.
Don't get me wrong, the fact that they oppose anti-bullying measures in schools, campaign against hate crime legislation when hate crimes against LGBT community is on the rise, imply that gay teachers are predators, etc... That's all absolutely standard hate group stuff.
But more specifically, they were formed to undermine and replace the UK's national LGBT charity, Stonewall. They applied for charitable status in the UK. One of their stated goals was to have Stonewall's school curriculum withdrawn, and replace it with one of their own making.
