It’s good that we’re discussing who can make the decision to use nuclear weapons. But it’s unfortunate that the conversation still mostly ends when you reach the part where the nuclear weapons are launched - because that’s when the reality of nuclear weapons actually kicks in.
Once a nuclear bomb is launched, it will make its way towards its target. It will likely be delivered by a missile or dropped from a plane.
The target will be a populated area. Nuclear armed states keep saying that they’d act in line with the laws of war but that’s bullshit. Nuclear weapons are built to wipe out cities, they’re meant to mass murder as many civilians as possible. That’s their reason to exist.
Once it detonates, it takes around 10 seconds for the fireball to reach its maximum size. The fireball is brighter and whiter than anything you’ve seen & hotter than the surface of the sun. It will evaporate people.
Immediately after the fireball comes the blast wave. It will knock over buildings, turn any everyday objects into flying debris, killing, trapping or pin down people.
And then there will be fires. And not just a regular fire —anything flammable would ignite, creating firestorms would suck out the oxygen from surrounding areas, causing deaths not only by heat and burn damages but also through suffocation.
That’s when the radioactive fallout comes. The radiation sickness that will result in people in the area suffering from nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, skin hemorrhages, loss of hair, internal bleeding, possibly seizures, and death.
If for those that still manage to survive all of this, they’re still not safe. Many will develop cancers, leukemia and other diseases over the coming years, in particularly children and women are more at risk for these long-term impacts.
The military simulate using nuclear weapons but they don’t do simulate what happens afterwards. There is no preparedness for dealing with the aftermath of nuclear use. The people making the decision wheter to use nuclear weapons or not DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO AFTERWARDS!
