Just drove past this at least two block-long assembly marching up 109 st by Jasper Ave. Some signs I saw included “Don’t Tread on Me,” “Make Canada Great Again,” and a Confederate flag.
Most were unmasked and not socially distant. This isn’t a protest for “freedom.” This is a rally for racism, fascism, and a show of white supremacy.
While we cast our gazes south in shock, let’s not fool ourselves for a moment into thinking this sort of evil doesn’t exist, brazenly, here in Canada.
If this outraged you and you’re looking for ways to take action, consider donating to orgs that serve communities most affected by this garbage. The Africa Centre, their program YEG The Come Up, and the Shades of Colour collective are all great options:
If everyone who liked/shared this original tweet donated only $5, that would be a LOT of money to go to these organizations.
I was only able to get one photo of the rally, which is the one I’ve posted. I reported on what else I saw.
And honestly, none of this hinges on whether or not there was a Confederate flag present. I maintain that I did see one while driving by, but MAGA messaging and “don’t tread” are also white supremacist messaging.
It is concerning, to say the least, that we’re seeing American far-right style messaging on the streets of Edmonton, particularly after the events of this week in DC.
