This thread has gotten a lot of attention and reminds me of early attempts to warn against the tech bro optimism that social media would be an unfettered good that would lead to the inevitable democratization of the world.
In the wake of the Arab Spring, many people tried to temper the optimism by warning that authoritarian governments would absolutely figure out how to use social media to their advantage — enter troll farms, etc.
The conversation about the Twitter ban has devolved into "is it good" or "is it bad" when the right question is, was it done in ways that were clear and transparent that cannot be misused/manipulated by even more destructive governments down the line.
It's worth listening to the warnings of activists in other countries (rather than the bad faith people on here shouting about Orwell) — social media companies like to put out fires rather than develop consistent policies, but that absolutely needs to change.

I’ve had an insane experience. Having raged about threads, this might be hypocritical, feel free to mute/unfollow/whatever, I just need to get this off my chest.
.@wethefifth has been asking me to join as a guest for months and we finally made it work. Here’s the link, it’s LONG but the segment at issue starts around 42min. It’s about the Bernie/Warren fight: open.spotify.com/episode/7lTasS…
We had a discussion, me and some dudes. I laid out the facts, which include: you don’t have to *intend* to be sexist in order to do or say something sexist. I also said most people and all men are sexist lol. Sorry/not sorry!
Firtash paid Toensing & diGenova $1.2m for 4 months of work (including a reported $200,000 for Parnas who worked as a translator/fixer) so a million is a lot! buzzfeednews.com/article/miriam…
Here is Fiona Hill’s testimony (sorry if the link is already dead, I don’t know why that happens so soon after they post it!) docs.house.gov/meetings/IG/IG…
Hill says she became aware in Jan/March 2019 of Giuliani’s interest in Ukraine through Solomon’s articles in The Hill and says she’s never met Giuliani
Hill says she tried to find out what Giuliani was up to and “most of the people I spoke to thought it was related to personal business on his part”
Testimony of Bill Taylor, named charge d’affaires in Ukraine after Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch was recalled, is out: docs.house.gov/meetings/IG/IG…
Taylor says he was weary of taking the job because “there was — I think I put it — a snake pit in Kyiv and a snake pit here [DC],” referring in part to the campaign against Yovanovitch.
Taylor says Sondland had contact with Giuliani (Sondland said he had none) and says he hardly talked to Rick Perry (Sondland, in contrast, talked to him all the time)
Sondland says he saw Trump before his testimony and that the president told him to “go tell the truth”
White House counsel asked him to come in for an interview ahead of his testimony and he declined. Also says he spoke to Rick Perry ahead of his testimony to “refresh his memory” 🤦🏻♀️
Talked to Giuliani, he won’t say if he has an actual agreement to act as Trump’s lawyer, which matters as Congressgional investigators try to get information from him: buzzfeednews.com/article/miriam…
Giuliani said “I have not made a decision” on whether to comply with his subpoena — and then said invoking attorney-client privilege is a form of compliance buzzfeednews.com/article/miriam…
Giuliani said he has not spoken with officials in China about concerns over Hunter Biden’s work there buzzfeednews.com/article/miriam…
