Great paper to raise awareness of the central position Radiology has in the transition from volume to value-based healthcare and how radiologists can be key players in this change. @RadiologyACR has good material on its Imaging 3.0 section. Follow the thread for some key points👇
Radiology has a central role in healthcare, with great potential to contribute to value-driven systems, improving individual patient health outcomes, and delivering socio-economic benefits. 👇
However, for some, radiology is considered a "cost centre", affecting the quality of care, but negatively contributing to value in healthcare.
Some measures could be taken by us, radiologists, to help change this outlook and create value to our practices: 👇
- Engage with referring clinicians to better understand their practices and needs;
- Follow evidence-based guidelines to assist referring physicians in requesting appropriate imaging;
- Work in collaboration with other departments to break down silos and improve patient flow;👇
- Use available resources to optimize workflow to minimize patient waiting times and shorten hospital stays;
- Engage patients in their care;
- Optimize communication with other teams through appropriate information technology tools; 👇
- Maintain a culture of constant quality monitoring and improvement
- Have a more active role in indicating when a procedure may not be necessary
- Support and conduct research on higher-level value contributions. #ValueBasedHealthcare
