This may be a "nothing succeeds like success" thing? In states getting more red (like Ohio) the GOP seems to be actually trying to win by more.
Florida being the other key example. Republicans have actually tried to win Hispanic votes and it paid off.
Whereas like... what did David Perdue actually *do* for the last eight weeks? Rick Scott would never be that lazy!
Again I have a bias here, coming from Massachusetts, where Republicans know they are outnumbered, and cannot be prideful in their approach to statewide elections. They have won six of the last eight gubernatorial races.
I remember how a Romney '02 staffer described the formula to me: to win statewide as a Republican in MA, you need 90% of Republicans, 30% of Democrats, and two-thirds of independents. That requires a certain amount of flexibility.
The crazy thing about the CA GOP is they've seen this in action: Schwarzenegger won, twice. You run someone like that and you can win. But he was only able to get there through the weird-ass recall process.
