MORE NEWS from tonight's call via @Olivia_Beavers & me:

To address members' safety concerns, McCarthy gave his blessing to Republicans to use proxy voting. BUT if they're a cosponsor to GOP lawsuit challenging it, he says they should remove themselves 1st…
This now concludes the NEWS-ing for tonight.
One other point on proxy voting: Dems have scheduled a last-minute vote for tomorrow on the 25th Amendment.

That makes it impossible for some members to get back to DC in time, even if they wanted to.

NEWS: Me & @heathercaygle are being told that special arrangements are being made to allow members to vote today who are in quarantine.

These members are not covid-positive or experiencing symptoms — they have received a negative test — but had been exposed.
The arrangements include entering through a special entrance that has been closed off to the public and then having members in Plexiglass in the gallery.

We're told there are 3 members who will be using these arrangements — 2 Dems, 1 Republican.
House R's say it's unfair & hypocritical for Dems to make special accommodations when it's convenient for them (the speaker's vote is today, where Pelosi needs every Dem she can get.)

But proxy voting won't be in place until rules are adopted tmrw. So members need to be present.

Happy first day of the 117th Congress!

I took a turn at the helm of Playbook today, with the help of the great @heatherscope @sarahnferris & @burgessev.

Here's everything you need to know about a *very* newsy day and week ahead >>…
The main event, of course, is the speaker's vote. And Pelosi's allies are 100% confident she'll reclaim gavel, even if it takes a few hours.

But she has little room for error — Pelosi's office was even emailing members up until the last-minute to reconfirm their attendance.

-There are 222 Dems & 211 Republicans this Congress.

-We're expecting 1 Dem absence & 2 GOP absences.

-There are 10 Dems who opposed Pelosi in 2019 who are still around.

-5 will back Pelosi, and the other 5 will either vote present or say someone else’s name

NEWS: On a House GOP call just now, Louie Gohmert said that if he had seen Liz Cheney's statement on the election before their leadership races, he would’ve voted against her, per source on call.

Cheney was unanimously elected GOP conf chair, despite some conservative grumbling.
Gohmert — speaking directly to Cheney — also said on the call he would've tried to make sure someone challenged her for conference chair.

Freedom Caucus members had debated whether to recruit a Cheney challenger, but ultimately didn't, nor did anyone else step up to the plate.
And CHENEY responded:

She told Gohmert that her statement just reaffirmed that America is governed by the rule of law & evidence of irregularities must be presented in court.

Cheney also said she was sure he didn’t disagree w/ that and she'd be happy 2 discuss w/ him further

Retiring GOP Rep. Francis Rooney, when pressed by @jimsciutto on whether Biden or Trump would better handle coronavirus, says:

"I don't think there's any doubt that Vice President Biden has the right approach. And there's a lot of Republicans that would agree with that as well."
MORE: When asked whether Trump has let down the American people with his response to the coronavirus, Rep. Rooney says: "In many respects, yes."
Rooney also doesn't commit to voting for Trump.

"I've got a very open mind about that. I'm continuing to study it. And I have some disagreements with the way the administration has conducted things in the last three and a half, four years."

Things getting HEATED at House GOP conference meeting right now.

Matt Gaetz & Thomas Massie both got on the mics and went after Liz Cheney for backing Massie’s primary opponent, per source in the room.
Now Rep. Chip Roy is attacking Cheney for her support of Dr. Fauci, per source in the room.

He lamented that his liberal primary opponent retweeted Cheney’s tweet about Fauci.
Reps. Louie Gohmert & Andy Biggs also got on the mics to defend Massie & express their concerns.

Biggs even accused Cheney of undermining their ability to win back the House & said if you don’t have something nice to say about Trump, then don’t say it at all, per source.

SCOOP: House Republican leaders are racing to distance themselves from a leading GOP congressional candidate after we uncovered hours of Facebook videos in which she expresses deeply racist, Islamophobic and anti-Semitic views.

the story w/ @allymutnick:…
It’s hard to even list all the offensive comments from Marjorie Greene, but let me try:

—She questioned whether Muslims should be allowed to serve in office, calling the midterms “an Islamic invasion" & accusing Muslims of wanting "special treatment" to “rise” above non-Muslims.
—She said that if she were black, she'd feel “proud” to see a Confederate statue "because I’d say, ‘Look how far I have come in this country.’”

—She said minorities are being held back in society by gangs, drugs, a lack of education, and abortions — “not white people.”
