Trump's speech sounds like a Stephen Miller written victory lap on all the immigration policies he got through during these last few years, even a namecheck for the Remain In Mexico program.
Trump describing how they inherited a lawless border. Interestingly, his current head of US Customs and Border Protection was...the head of Border Patrol under Obama.
Trump now talking about terrorists coming from the Middle East and crossing through the southern border. No mention of specific cases.
Trump says he thinks 'we' came up with naming it 'caravans'?
"The hispanic population of our country gets it," Trump says on his immigration policies.
Trump spent most of the speech warning that his policies shouldn't be undone and that caravans were forming to head to the southern border already.

He said he hopes ICE/DHS voices are 'heard' well into the future.

Speech over.

NEW: DOJ IG releases report on the zero tolerance policy -- aka the family separation policy -- finding that the Attorney General was the driving force behind it, failed to prepare for it, and that Jeff Sessions knew it would lead to children being separated from their fams.
Notes from US Attorneys across the country on a call that Jeff Sessions held in May 2018.

“we need to take away children; if care about kids, don’t bring them in; won’t give amnesty to kids; to people with kids” (strikethrough in original)."
"We concluded that the Department’s single-minded
focus on increasing immigration prosecutions came at the
expense of careful and appropriate consideration of the impact of family unit prosecutions and child separations."

BREAKING: The acting leader of ICE abruptly resigned on Wednesday, just two weeks into the job after the agency’s previous director also stepped down unexpectedly in December, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

More upheaval at DHS.

buzzfeednews.com/article/hameda…
The departure of Jonathan Fahey is the latest in a long line of resignations at ICE during the Trump administration. The agency, which has come under mounting public scrutiny for controversial policies throughout Trump’s term, has now seen six leaders come and go since 2017.
At the same time, Fahey’s resignation is symbolic of a Department of Homeland Security that has been under constant upheaval since President Donald Trump took office.

Hearing from DHS employees tonight who were very critical of Wolf's tenure.

"Chad Wolf gave voice to the worst impulses of this administration...and leaves DHS significantly worse than he found it."

buzzfeednews.com/article/hameda…
Prior to his current job, Wolf was chief of staff to former DHS Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen. He was integral to the then-secretary as she navigated controversial policy decisions, such as the one to separate parents charged with crossing into the country illegally from their children.
Wolf coordinated Nielsen’s schedule, wrote and edited speeches, briefed her for meetings on immigration policy, and traveled with her for appearances on the border and elsewhere.

CONFIRMED: Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf is resigning effecting 11:59 p.m. tonight. Wolf tells staff that the decision is due to court rulings.

Several federal courts have found his appointment illegal.
"I am saddened to take this step, as it was my intention to serve the Department until the end of this Administration. Unfortunately, this action is warranted by recent events, including the ongoing and meritless court rulings regarding the validity of my authority as Acting Sec"
This comes days after President Trump withdrew Wolf's nomination in the senate.

It also means that Pete Gaynor, the FEMA administrator, will now be acting secretary.

.@davidfrum says Trump’s restricting of asylum at the southern border was something he got right.

I’ll note that it isn’t just those in the advocacy community who protested these changes, but DHS asylum officers as well.
I question the use of ‘residency’ to describe those who apply for asylum in the US.
