The four days of the Pongal festival are Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, Maatu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal.
Harvest festivals are the oldest festivals around the world cutting across religions and countries thanking Nature for the bounty it offers in the form of new crops .It also marks transmigration of the Sun from one Rāshi to the next.
The festival (Pongal) is named after the ceremonial "Pongal", which means "to boil, overflow" and refers to the traditional dish prepared from the new harvest of rice boiled in milk with jaggery.
To mark the festival, the pongal sweet dish is prepared, first offered to the gods followed with an offering to cows, and then shared by the family.
The history of the Pongal dish in festive and religious context can be traced to the Chola period.
With the current situation, it’s reiterates the fact that we are all part of an eco system where Mother Nature is the Alpha and it is befitting to give her thanks be it Pongal or any other festival. Thanks to Mother Nature for nourishing us.
