“And so what?” many uninformed 20 somethings may say.
Well, aside from that there won’t be any capacity for granny/mum/dad when they get COVID — and I’m already going to assume you don’t care about them — there won’t be any space for you when you:
1/ Accidentally anaesthetise yourself into needing an ICU bed by taking too much ketamine at a party your mates organised on Signal
2/ Smoke the last of the spice in the bag, not realising that, like salt ‘n’ shake crisps, that’s the strong stuff — and need an ICU bed for the night to keep you alive
3/ Get taken out crossing the road by a speeding driver (the roads are SO quiet in lock downs!)
4/ Have a catastrophic subarachnoid haemorrhage — the ticking time bomb many of us carry, but some will be unlucky to experience it going off
5/ Develop meningitis — with an ICU bed available you have a 19/20 chance of surviving. Without an ICU bed? Not so great.
The NHS has always been a bit crap round the edges for non-emergency care, but for emergencies it has, until now, been world-class. Capacity due to COVID has changed this and it makes us, the guys who pick up the pieces, worried. #dontbeadick
