/6: We analysed data from the UCL Covid-19 Social Study from over 30,000 adults 🧑🤝🧑 in the UK during the start of the first lockdown (21st March to 4th April 2020) covidsocialstudy.org
/6: Of 22,113 drinkers, 48% reported drinking about the same, 26% reported drinking less and 26% reported drinking more than usual over the past week.
/6: Reporting drinking more than usual (compared with same as usual) over the past week was associated with being younger, female, having post-16 educational qualifications and high income.
/6: Being stressed about catching or becoming ill from COVID-19, being stressed about finances and having an anxiety disorder were also factors associated with reporting drinking more than usual during lockdown.
/6: Take home message: Important (particularly given this third lockdown) to provide targeted support to certain groups to counteract an increase in drinking during the first COVID-19 related lockdown.
