If we look at history, insurrections occur when conditions become dire, the needs of people are ignored, and they get desperate.

A botched pandemic response + impotent economic relief in the face of crisis + a demagogue who shifts blame and stokes hatred = where we are today.
1/
To be clear, those who stormed the capital must be prosecuted and punished for their crimes, but if we don’t address the pain people are facing ACROSS the country, by people of all political leanings, we will never be able to bring our country back together.
2/
Congress needs to pass REAL relief: recurring checks to relieve people’s economic fears, labor reforms so they don’t fear losing their job for taking a day to care for a sick relative, a jobs guarantee to ensure economic stability, M4A…
3/
These things have been long overdue. The economic path our country has been on for the last 40 years has seen more families struggling while the super-rich take a greater and greater share of the wealth those struggling families helped to create.
4/
& we need reforms to ensure people feel their Reps are accountable to them and their neighbors. You may not always be happy with how your Rep votes, but people must feel confident that they're representing THEIR DISTRICT, not wealthy donors or powerful special interests.
5/
Our democracy did not emerge overnight. It wasn’t born with the Dec. of Independence or ratification of the Constitution. It has been built over nearly 250 years through hard work, sacrifice, and forward thinking.
6/
My friend Congressman Elijah Cummings would say “our children are the living messages we send to a future we will never see.” The work we’re doing here must be to secure a better future for our children and grandchildren.
7/
Our Founding Fathers knew this, as did heroes like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who told a crowd the day before he was assassinated, “I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land”
8/
It’s time to build towards that future.
My colleagues on both sides of the aisle are seeking unity. We need that but we must also have justice. Then we can find unity through a shared commitment to creating a more fair & equitably society in which all our children can thrive.
