Morning! I’m going to talk about the second wave of Cheese-week for a moment. Earlier this week formerly racially charged Cheese brand changed their brand name to Cheer.
That’s great, it’s done. It should have been done months ago if not years ago.
With the announcement of the new branding has come a rise in anti Cheer sentiment on social media.

Side note: I would have loved to have been part of the marketing meeting and the focus groups when they tested Cheer Cheese. It would have been absolute funniest thing.
On FB (the dark place) ‘Aussie’ media groups (you know the ones) and meme pages are pulling out the announcement for public reactions. It’s possibly the weirdest thing that it works. The changing of the Cheese is a rallying cry.
Cheese Historians resurface dusting off the etymology of the original Cheese Name and opposing Cheese Historians rebut with the argument that the name was a myth.
Mean while: your everyday semi-right wing citizen sees a meme which says: Share this if you don’t think COON should change it’s name. nostalgic for simpler times when racially charged marketing was overt. They share it.
The cheese’s original logo is quickly becoming a flag for both subtle and overt racism on socials.
It’s a truly strange time we are in. I worry that people are already making Cheese flags for Counter Invasion Day ralliés (they call them Australia Day Celebrations) and we’ll see a rise in Cheese branding Tattoos alongside the now dreaded symbol of the southern cross.
My personal experience with this was seeing a member of my now extended family (I just got engaged) share the meme. I politely approached the sharer and explained the reason behind the change and why it was offensive and not such a problem to be changed.
They responded they missed Chico’s and Redskins and these are brand names that have been around longer than either of us. (I had plenty of counter arguments ready for that particular line)
Before I could respond more friends of theirs joined in with comments.

Long story short. I deleted and blocked said extended family member. They are too far gone and I don’t have the energy to ‘save’ them.
