Building the Statue of Liberty, 1881.

"When the statue was first erected its copper exterior caught the sunlight, but within a couple of decades the metal had oxidized and Libertas had adopted her now familiar shade of green"

On June 17, 1885, the French steamer Isère arrived in New York with the crates holding the disassembled statue on board. Two hundred thousand people lined the docks and hundreds of boats put to sea to welcome the ship. Image

Colonel Gail Seymour "Hal" Halvorsen is best known as the "Berlin Candy Bomber" or "Uncle Wiggly Wings" for dropping candy to German children during the Berlin Airlift from 1948 to 1949.

Halvorsen's operation dropped over 23 tons of candy to the residents of Berlin. ImageImage
According to Halvorsen, one child asked "How will we know it is your plane?" to which Halvorsen responded that he would wiggle his wings, something he had done for his parents when he first got his pilot's license in 1941.
He founded "Operation Little Vittles", which he began with no authorization from his superiors. Over the next year, he became a national hero with support from all over the United States. Image

Letter from Labayu (ruler of Shechem) to the Egyptian Pharaoh Amenhotep III or his son Akhenaten. 14th century BCE.

"When an ant is struck, does it not fight back and bite the hand of the man that struck it?"

"Say to the king, my lord: Message of Lab'ayu, your servant. I fall at the feet of the king, my lord.

As to your having written me, "Guard the men who seized the city;" how am I to guard (such) men? It was in war (nukurtu) the city was seized.

When I had sworn my peace—and when I swore the magnate swore with me—the city, along with my god, was seized. He has slandered me: gl (and) (ši-ir-ti) (I am slandered) before the king, my lord.

Moreover, when an ant is struck...

The Ghent Altarpiece, completed by Jan van Eyck in 1432, has been stolen 7 times, which makes it the most stolen work of art in history.
It's almost been destroyed in a fire, was nearly burned by rioting Calvinists, it’s been forged, pillaged, dismembered, censored, stolen by Napoleon, hunted in the first world war, sold by a renegade cleric, then stolen repeatedly during the Second World War…."
