.@GovPritzker pls overrule Chicago's mayor and keep our schools closed. You know she will never admit her plan is a mistake. People will die because of her intransigence, just as they have before. We need state action. wsj.com/articles/europ…
Chicagoans aren't just up against a virus. We are up against a mayor who is fighting to reopen bars and restaurants as the new strain takes hold. There U.S. death toll will hit 500K next month and Chicago's mayor is ready to feed us to the virus to keep the economy going.
Members of the Chicago City Council have questioned the mayor's office about the new strain & any enhanced mitigations it might require. The mayor's staff simply says the vaccine will protect against the new strain. But the new strain will take hold here before most of us get it.
The VAST majority of Chicagoans will not have access to the vaccine before B117 becomes the dominant strain in our city. Ask any expert. There is no controversy about this. Population wise, the number of people vaccinated won't be remotely meaningful by then.
“I see the new strain as a threat multiplied. Take everything we know about the risk of this virus and just multiply it substantially,” said Dr. Ashish K. Jha, dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health. nytimes.com/2021/01/15/hea…
So let's talk math: At present, it's estimated that children are about half as likely as adults to spread COVID-19, and some experts say this applies to the new strain as well. But if the new strain is 40-80% more transmissible, in what world is it safe to reopen schools?
And what about teachers? Remember them? I rarely hear them mentioned when people talk about how safe it is to reopen schools. Personally, I support @CTULocal1.
Chicago's reopening plan has always been terrible, as explained here. But with the new strain, it's just murderous. The mayor won't back down. The governor must step in.

Chicago's mayor's only plan to address the new strain is that the vaccine will combat it. Well, the B117 variant is spreading wildly and the federal vaccine reserve is gone. Your move, @JBPritzker. Please follow the science, because our mayor won't.

A lot of people are interacting with the pandemic as though the situation is improving. In the short term, those people are disastrously incorrect.
A friend told me today there were more maskless people in our neighborhood today than there were last wk. Some people are becoming more careless as cases surge & as a new, more transmissible strain barrels toward dominance. I think the *idea* of the vaccine is having this effect.
People think we're in the homestretch when we're really in the "it's darkest just before dawn" stretch.

The head of the Biden administration’s vaccination program is Bechara Choucair. He was the commissioner of the Chicago Dept. of Public Health from 2009 to 2014. He oversaw the dismantling of half of our city's publicly funded mental health clinics under Rahm Emanuel. We've met.
Here's Choucair being chased out of a meeting by protesters over the clinic closure plans back in 2011.
When dozens of people who received care at those clinics were about to go to jail, bc they'd barricaded themselves inside the Woodlawn clinic, in a final push to save it, Choucair couldn't look anyone in the eye as he fled the scene. People he knew for years tried to talk to him.

A man lived in O'Hare for 3 months bc he was afraid of returning to CA and getting COVID. A judge has called him a "danger to the community" and held him on $1K bail. This is despicable. This man needs some help, not to be caged in the path of the very disease he's terrified of.
The danger is that security personnel did not notice something so anomalous for three months. With all the security they put us through at airports? Be serious. This man exposed a major hole in the system. Deal with that and let him get some care. theguardian.com/world/2021/jan…?
I can only imagine how terrified this man must be. No one should be caged in the path of this disease, but thinking about how frightened he had to be, to stay in that airport for so long, and him being forced into a place where COVID runs rampant, my blood boils. He needs care.

Lana Clarkson. That's the name of the woman Phil Spector killed. She was an actress with an adoring cult following for her B-movie sci-fi films. She delivered food to AIDS patients in the 80's when most people were too afraid or couldn't be bothered. She dreamed of doing comedy.
CNN: "Grammy-winning music producer Phil Spector dies of natural causes"

Rolling Stone: "The famed ‘Wall of Sound’ producer and architect of some of pop music’s most enduring songs whose legacy was marred by a murder conviction, has died at the age of 80."

Lana deserves better.
How about, "Phil Spector, the Widely Loathed Producer Who Murdered Actress Lana Clarkson, Dies at the Age of 80."

I got blocked for this reply. Fans of the $1400 check plan would be crying out for $2000 if it were being demanded of Trump. But it's Biden who said the words "$2000 checks," then backtracked, so it's okay to be a used car salesman about it.
This will fuck y'all in the midterms and you'll just blame the left.
He hasn't even been inaugurated yet and they are working on losing the next round of elections. The GOP will have a field day with this check thing. Every promise the Dems make will be called a "$2K check promise" -- people will agree they were tricked and distrust the Dems.

People who think $1,400 is enough are, unshockingly, not the ones who need relief.
A Dem is about to be president and suddenly, some liberals think $1,400 is enough help for people who've barely been hanging on for months. $2000 is, in reality, nowhere near enough, but they won't even insist upon that, and they show contempt for those who do. Disgusting.
For some people, caring about the poor is just a brand. It's a concern when they want to vilify the other side. When their team is winning, they are as "let them eat cake" as the Republicans.
