These details are often cited by those who challenge the election results - how could the cellar-dwelling candidate nobody gave a damn about possibly collect the most votes in history? But I warned all through the election not to underestimate the size of the Weary Biden vote.
All through the campaign, Trump supporters predicted a huge "Shy Trump" vote would turn out on Election Day and confound the pollsters. And they did! But as I feared, it turned into a heavyweight bout between the Shy Trump and Weary Biden votes.
Leaving aside the ongoing debates about ballot irregularities in some states, there was clearly a large pool of Biden voters who didn't care much about him, or even about politics overall. They were just tired of Trump drama, exhausted and demoralized from the pandemic.
They key to the election was the overwhelming desire to "return to normal." Biden didn't really have to prove he could do that. His campaign just needed people to believe Trump couldn't do it. Trump's campaign didn't adjust until far too late.
A lot of people are deeply cynical about politics in general, with very good reasons. The cynic vote was easy to turn against Trump. They didn't pay much attention to his solid accomplishments in office. For them it was all about the rhetoric and media coverage.
Some of the same forces underlying Mask Mania were at work too. People don't like to feel helpless and frustrated. They wanted to lash out, exert some control, make a statement against the pandemic. Voting against Trump was a means of doing that.
In the end, the heavyweight bout between Shy Trump and Weary Biden voters was very close - 60,000 voters in a few key states, something like that. But it seems inexplicable and baffling to observers who assume intensity of support is key to turnout, and turnout is everything.
Intensity and turnout are usually vital, but this time a lot of those Weary Biden voters were more energetic about voting against Trump than voting FOR him, and they weren't interested in turning out for big demonstrative public events. Voila - turnout without intensity.
Of course, there will be no talk of weak "mandates" or demands for "power-sharing." Biden will govern as if he won 90% of the vote, as Democrats always do, and the media always demands. The events of the past few weeks will give him even more power to rule, and suppress dissent.
And so the Weary Biden vote brings us the paradox of the most powerful statist government in our lifetimes - perhaps in all of U.S. history - installed by a maddening election where all of the visible enthusiasm was for the other candidate.
... followed, alas, by a Senate runoff where the weary and demoralized GOP voters stayed home. Joe Biden, the president nobody wanted, will bring you the almighty government you cannot refuse, and few will recall voting in favor of what is about to happen to America. /end

The worldwide movement toward "limited authoritarianism," already well under way but dramatically accelerated by the coronavirus, is driven by the elite consensus that ordinary people cannot be trusted with so much freedom.
"Limited authoritarianism" is the best phrase for what the elite have in mind. They have decided that a growing list of topics are simply off the table. Consensus has been reached, and no further input from voters will be permitted on those topics.
This is a natural consequence of the progressive ideology, which is inherently authoritarian, although it peddles itself in the early stage with lots of jibber-jabber freedom and liberty. Progressives by definition believe that the growth of the State can never be reversed.

Why, of COURSE you have freedom of speech! You're just not allowed to say anything the Ministry of Truth has determined to be false.

By the way, the Ministry of Truth has determined that claiming your freedom of speech has been violated is a dangerous falsehood.
Well, of COURSE you're allowed to vote. We love democracy! Anything that makes it harder to vote is a crime against democracy!

You're just not allowed to vote on things the Ministry of Science has determined are too complex for you to understand. The list grows steadily longer.
Of COURSE we want you to prosper! We want to raise the minimum wage. We're brimming with smart pro-business policies!

Be advised that the Ministry of Virtue will decide when your ambitions have curdled into greed and you must be punished with confiscatory taxation.

Time once again to emphasize the differences between totalitarianism, authoritarianism, and fascism. They're often used as synonyms but they are different, although they do tend to lead to each other. Order one, and the other two are usually delivered soon enough.
Totalitarianism is best understood as the politicization of everything. Every facet of life is infused with political meaning... and subjected to political control. There is little room for privacy or individualism. Every word and deed is seen as a political action.
Totalitarianism does *not* require authoritarian government, although it usually leads to such. You can be totalitarian without having any real government power at all, enforcing your political will through mob actions and corporate power. Examples from recent history abound.

The coming year will see Biden Democrats walking slowly through a vast field of small businesses exhausted by the battle with the coronavirus, shooting any who can still move. Big Tech will hold a pillow over the faces of those who cry out too loudly.
The destruction of the independent American middle class is one of the highest policy goals of the hard Left. It is finally at hand, thanks to the coronavirus and its political aftershocks. A year ago, they could not have dreamed they would get such a perfect kill shot.
A true middle class has economic interests that run counter to command economics, confiscatory taxation, centralized power, and other features of socialism. It also has the numbers to protect those interests at the ballot box. Of COURSE the Left hates it and wants to subdue it.

Ever since 9/11, we've been instructed that tiny minorities of extremists are solely responsible for their reprehensible actions. There was no greater sin than blaming law-abiding people who share some of their beliefs.
That's how we got the "lone wolf terrorist" cliche. A great herd of lone wolves swept across the world, each completely isolated from anything but the most direct support for their heinous deeds. "Tiny minorities of extremists" were blamed for "hijacking" the beliefs of millions.
The Western world did backflips to completely firewall the actions of terrorists from the larger bodies of people they claimed to represent. We hired a legion of consultants to show us exactly where the line between extremism and legitimate belief was drawn.

One problem with the GOP's inability to understand or process populism is that it gets walloped by the all-populist all-the-time Democrats. Another problem is that when Republican populists do appear, they tend to be rather unfocused and undisciplined.
Political focus and discipline are very hard to come by. It takes a huge organization that spreads across both the political and private spheres to harness popularity and convert it into effective policy action. The Left spend decades building and refining its machinery.
The Left's machine spots populist talent early and begins guiding it toward politically productive ends. Detailed plans are made to move the country toward the populist's goals across multiple election cycles. Money and media influence is lined up to achieve concrete goals.
