Unix is alive and doing well. iOS, Android, the cloud world is made of Linux, we have FreeBSD, OpenBSD and OpenSSH, and even mighty MS started to love Linux and opensource. The only dead thing is BYTE magazine. That is the problem with predicting the future.
All old MS dudes were refusing to believe in Linux and OpenSource. Then come Satya Nadella, who changed old dude ways, and in that process, they kept MS alive in the server market, including azure cloud. Otherwise, there is nothing special about Windows servers.
Office and Win10 desktop is a different matter. They do have a monopoly there, and it is not going away anytime soon. MS-office is their main cash cow.

A group of penguins in the water is called a raft but on land they’re called a waddle! Other names for a group of penguins include rookery, colony, and huddle. #PenguinAwarenessDay
A penguin’s body is tapered at both ends and it has a large head, short neck and elongated body. This streamlined design helps penguins swim fast. #PenguinAwarenessDay
Long thread: What happens when your domain registrar close down biz and goes bankrupted:
NET4 India is in insolvency case, and it went out of business. The director is in jail for fraud. Over 3,75,000 domains stuck with them. Their phone lines are off, & email bounces.
I have 15 years old domain stuck with them, and getting transfer out of it seems like a nightmare. Thank god I moved all my domains a long time ago from NET4 to @Godaddy and later moved to @Namecheap.
To transfer your own domain to 3rd party like Namecheap, you need an unlocked domain and auth code. NET4 is out of biz, and their control panel is locked too. Hence no way to get the auth code.
Macs with T2, M1 chips cannot be restored to factory state without contacting to Apple over the Internet sneak.berlin/20201204/on-tr… Apple no longer make computers. Newer macs are glorified iPhones with keyboard and screen ;) LOL.
For most Mac users, this is not a problem as it is the middle path between security & usability. These are edge cases mentioned in the blog post. Apple still is the best certified Unix systems that end users can buy for day-to-day stuff like office work, web surfing, programming.
Others who need total control over their computer can switch to Linux/BSD. Win10 is not an option as it is equally bad, even with the bastardized version of Linux/WSL. MS started to love Linux to stay relevant, especially developers whose server workload runs mostly on Linux.YMMV
I haven't changed the firewall in like the last nine months or so. There is no way a network-wide firewall will cause Zoom call drops or disconnecting apps randomly. The network-wide firewall needs a lot of planning, and we don't touch em for fun as it can cause serious problems
My favorite one was when a popular WAF/CDN service started asking security ReCaptcha for everyone behind our internet, which hosts half of the sites. This guy did shady things like running bots & scrapping content from work desktop, so our outgoing IP tagged as 100% dirty. lol
Oh my. Pandemic? What Pandemic? It seems Apple, Google, Amazon, and other tech giants benefited most during the current Pandemic. Apple becomes the first U.S. company to reach a $2 trillion market cap cnbc.com/2020/08/19/app…
Now you know why Epic and Hey and others don't want 30% Apple tax.
Apple makes cheap hardware and sells at premium rates. The App store collects a 30% tax. Apple ecosystem now includes services such as streaming music, TV, radio, movies, including books/newspapers/games subscription. They are all set to become the first 3T market cap.
All this dram around teenagers' app is mind-blowing
The Indian government banned TikTok, and they lost over 200m users.
Microsoft rumoured that they want to buy TikTok.
The US government wants to ban TikTok.
I can't wait to see the next twist in TikTok saga.
Meanwhile, Google is working on "Youtube Shorts" video service based on YouTube for sharing short clips. If anyone can monetize this service, it is going to be Google. Rest, including Microsoft, has no idea how to deal with that stuff.
The year is 2025, and Google announced the shutdown of Youtube shorts. lol.
