Today we’re releasing a summary of our recent pay study. Based on data @CondeNast supplied in September, 2020, the study is a snapshot of our union at a moment in time, but its findings resonate with many present and past @NewYorker employees’ experiences. newyorkerunion.com
The main conclusion of our analysis is that most unionized employees of @NewYorker are underpaid, many severely so. Here are some other takeaways: newyorkerunion.com/pay-study
.@NewYorker's racial demographics do not reflect the diversity of N.Y.C. Our unit is 56% white, 16% Asian, 11% Black, 7% Latino, and 7% people of two or more races. Almost two-thirds of full-time union members are women, the majority of whom are white.
Our bargaining unit skews young. Members in their twenties are by far the most racially diverse age group. The drop-off in employees older than thirty-nine could be partly the result of ageism, but it also reflects the difficulty of living on @NewYorker's low and stagnant pay.
The median salary for full-time union employees is $64,000, but some who have worked @NewYorker for years make less. The gap between men’s and women’s median pay over all is $4,000; among people of color, the gap between men’s and women’s median salaries is closer to $7,000.
We presented our findings to management on November 17th, along with a wage proposal that was reasonable, realistic, and primarily corrective. On January 12th, we received management’s counter-proposal, the contents of which were insulting and unacceptable to our members.
.@NewYorker management proposed a salary floor of $45,000—only $3,000 above the lowest existing salaries, and far from a livable or competitive wage. They rejected the concept—standard in union contracts—of annual increases, and wanted to reserve the right to decrease salaries.
.@NewYorker management's response showed a complete lack of understanding of the value of the work we do, let alone industry salary standards. It illustrates their unwillingness to invest in and retain their talented employees, and our members are angry.
We stand in solidarity, ready to fight for the contract our members deserve. We urge @NewYorker@CondeNast management to come to the table next week prepared to bargain toward a fair deal, including fair wages—we won’t settle for anything less. newyorkerunion.com/pay-study

Today @newyorkerunion is undertaking a half-day work stoppage. We demand a contract that reflects the value of our labor and the principles in our pages, and the foundation of that contract is #JustCauseNoExceptions.
Just cause is an essential labor protection and among the core reasons we organized our union. Today, we are withholding our labor to protest management’s resistance to our proposal. #JustCauseNoExceptions
It's critical, especially in this moment of reckoning, that employees have a voice in the workplace—particularly one with a record of unfairness (@condenast), governed by opaque rules (@newyorker), and helmed by mostly white leaders (@condenast/@newyorker). #JustCauseNoExceptions
