At long last, Donald Trump will leave office tomorrow.

His presidency and administration will be remembered for unprecedented incompetence and corruption.

I was here through it all, and can attest to Trump's historic legacy of failure.
[Thread]
Twice the loser of the popular vote, Trump saw his 2021 opponent receive the largest number of votes in history, with the highest vote share against a sitting POTUS since 1932.

Trump was the first US President impeached twice, and the least popular POTUS ever polled by Gallup.
Trump will leave the United States with fewer jobs than when he took office, the worst record on the economy since Herbert Hoover departed amid the Great Depression.
Trump presided over historic poverty, student debt, and inequality. The rate of Americans without health insurance reversed a decade-long trend of decline and began rising again on Trump's watch.
Trump was a failure on his own terms. His trade wars increased the trade deficit. The loss of manufacturing jobs worsened. When his promise that "Mexico would pay for the wall" fizzled, he tried to steal the money from the defense budget. He never had a plan to replace the ACA.
Trump's only legislative success was a tax cut that overwhelmingly benefited the wealthy, including those who wrote it, and exploded budget deficits while doing little for working Americans. His promises of job creation via a big infrastructure bill became "a long-running joke."
Trump promised bold action to address gun violence after the Parkland mass shooting, and promised to protect America's clean air and water. Multi-million dollar industry donors bought him off.
Trump caused the longest government shutdown in American history, and then caved to end it without winning a single concession.
Trump degraded the office of the President with openly racist comments and acts, and with defenses of white supremacists.
Trump hired and promoted white nationalists who helped him design and implement bigoted policies designed to intentionally harm people of color, and many others.
Four years of Donald Trump's foreign policy has left the United States isolated in the world, our friends alienated, and our alliances weakened as Trump embraced dictators and human rights abusers.

Meanwhile, Iran and North Korea are pursuing expanded nuclear weapons programs.
Donald Trump's never-ending attacks on his perceived enemies, including critics and journalists, and the mountain of lies he told in the process, sowed terrible division in the country, ripped Americans' trust in their government to shreds, and incited violence.
Trump refused to release his tax returns, engaged in historic self-dealing, and saw a chaotic, ever-changing cast of Cabinet secretaries and staff resign in rage or disgrace. At his presidency's end he's handing out pardons to his many criminal friends and associates like candy.
Donald Trump's mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic is the worst failure of American government in our nation's history.

Since Trump promised the public that it would "just disappear," a claim he privately admitted he knew wasn't true, 400,000 Americans have died.
In the waning days of his presidency, Trump refused to accept defeat, and spread his biggest lie: that the election had been stolen. It wasn't true, but Trump used it to foment insurrection and incite a violent attack on the seat of American government: the U.S. Capitol itself.
Donald Trump leaves our country weaker in nearly every respect. His presidency is a stain on our history, a legacy of division, violence, corruption, and failure. We are well rid of him. Repairing the damage Trump did will be a long, arduous process. And I'm ready to get to work.

Kevin McCarthy should resign.
Hawley and Cruz deserve to be held accountable, but they are back-benchers.

What Kevin McCarthy did was just as bad, but he is Minority Leader. Every House Republican voted to make him Speaker, and when he led his caucus into an attack on our democracy two thirds followed him.
Kevin McCarthy embraced and empowered the worst conspiracy theorists in his caucus. He spread the very lies that helped incite this violence. He stood shoulder to shoulder with Trump in trying to destroy our democracy. He always enables Trump's worst and most destructive acts.

You plainly spread false conspiracy theories for political expediency to divert blame. You and your colleagues bellowed lies in the place where terrorists inspired by an endless stream of lies and conspiracy theories tried to overthrow our national government. It's contemptible.
Let's get something straight, ok? The terrorists, neo-Nazis, and white supremacists who attacked the Capitol, assaulted police officers, put up a noose, stole and looted, wrote "murder the media" on our doors, and planted bombs – they came here directly from a Trump rally.
The thousands who attempted the violent overthrow of the American government were not "antifa," they were MAGA.

They were incited and inspired by the lies and conspiracy theories of Donald Trump and given waives and shout-outs from Members of Congress who called them "patriots."

Donald Trump is a danger to our democracy.

I continue to support his impeachment and removal from office, and am looking carefully at new articles of impeachment being drafted and offered by my colleagues.
Impeachment, however, would require the cooperation of Senate Republicans who have always protected Trump in the past.

The 25th Amendment can only be invoked by the Vice President with the concurrence of the Cabinet.
Congress must ensure Trump’s removal from office by the swiftest and surest method available: confirmation of the American people’s will as expressed in the 2020 election.

I look forward to completing the certification of that election as soon as possible.

The recording released yesterday establishes beyond a doubt that Donald Trump used the power of his office to threaten election officials, and to coerce them into committing criminal acts to overturn the election results.

This clearly warrants a criminal investigation.

1/4
Trump has held numerous meetings and calls with election officials and lawmakers in other states where he has attempted to negate election results.

Those conversations should be examined by investigators to determine whether Trump engaged in additional criminal acts.

2/4
Trump has not acted alone in his attempts to overturn the election.

Investigators should also scrutinize the actions of WH Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Senator Lindsey Graham, and any others who may have been party to criminal acts intended to change election results.

If you find the failure to get a deal here frustrating as hell, you are not alone.

But we need to be honest about why this is happening. Failure to say who held this up helps them keep doing it.

So be precise. "Congress" is NOT holding this up, Senate Republicans are. Look–
1/
Who fought tooth and nail to stop Americans from getting direct payments aka stimulus checks?

Senate Republicans did.
And when it was clear that checks were going to happen, who cut the size of your checks in half?

Senate Republicans did. 3/

The “slush fund” to which he refers is a Fed program that helps prevent states and localities from going bankrupt and having to lay off police, teachers, and firefighters — and one of the loudest voices highlighting the need to help states is the (Republican) Governor of Arkansas
These Senators are trying to use the suffering of the American people to force budgets cuts on states, cities, and towns in the middle of a pandemic that they are on the front lines of.

They are holding the whole bill up over this, and lying about it.
Again, Republicans are just straight-up lying about this. It isn’t a “blue state bailout” or a “slush fund,” it’s about saving American jobs.

Over ONE MILLION Americans jobs have been lost in the public sector. Your community loses services AND takes a big economic hit.
