There is going to be a lot of talk about the Biden-Harris Executive Orders dropping today and I am HERE FOR IT including the protections against sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination. THIS ONE IS A BIG DEAL HERE IS WHY
Remember in June when SCOTUS Justice Neil Gorsuch momentarily became a progressive folk hero for his role in authoring the Court's decision that said employers couldn't fire you for being gay or trans? Here's a refresher
That decision was really good news! OF COURSE your boss shouldn't be able to fire you because of who you are. Remember when the Court said no your boss isn't just trying to enforce a "dress code" at work they are actively being a discriminatory dillweed? THAT WAS GREAT
But that great decision was really narrow. There are lots of areas of the law where sexual orientation and gender identity are not protected. Like housing! Today's EO takes the first step in getting those broader protections into federal law
This is a process familiar to the Biden-Harris team. During the Obama years when there was a hostile Congress the Obama administration did A LOT to advance LGBTQ rights via the executive branch
And the fact that Pres Biden nominated Vanita Gupta and Kristen Clarke to key positions within the Department of Justice is a clear signal that this administration intends to pick back up where the Obama administration left off and that is a breath of fresh air
The Federalists Society bootlickers didn't let the last four years of packing the courts happen for naught, though. There will be fights over these orders and everything the Biden-Harris Administration plans to do
But let's absolutely not forget that on DAY ONE of the Biden-Harris Administration among the first actions it took was to protect LGBTQ folks when one of the first actions of the outgoing administration was the polar opposite
Congress needs to finish the job and pass the Equality Act which would make it clear that sexual orientation and gender identity are protected from discrimination. So that's the next step!
One of the least surprising bits from yesterday's nazi parade and storm on the Capitol were the presence of so many well-known anti-choice protesters and activists
At @RewireNewsGroup we've covered the intersection of fascism and anti-choice politics for a long time now!
California Solicitor General is up to start and makes the very cogent argument that the ACA cannot be struck down simply because of Republican shenanigans
Roberts first question is on standing and whether not getting insurance is a violation of the ACA
Roberts wants to know if they don't abide by the mandate if they need to check the box that they've ever violated the law in a job application
I’m gonna actually sleep for the first time in four years and everyone in this house can feel it
There are exactly zero words printed about the partners and children of journalists over the last four years who were just along for their family members horrible ride + some
Today my teenager told me he saw me REALLY smile for the first time in years so yeah
Good morning, Twitter! I am here to live-tweet through much of the Amy Coney Barrett hearing today.
It's going to be a long day so grab some snacks, some water, and stretch as needed. Here's what is in store
Each member of the Judiciary Committee will get 30 minutes to question ACB then a round of 20 minute questions. All over the course of the next two days
Lindsay Graham opened today's hearing complaining about the Affordable Care Act and that California gets more money than South Carolina
