[THREAD] My dad, the late Bernard Deutch, served our country in battle, earning a Purple Heart fighting the Nazis at the Battle of the Bulge. He believed in America because of the opportunities it offered his immigrant father and the hope it offered the little guy to succeed. 1/8

My mom, the late Jean Deutch, never got to go to college but made sure her 5 kids had that opportunity. She sat in the House gallery when her youngest son was sworn into Congress.

I’ll be thinking about them & everyone just like them at President Joe Biden's inauguration. 2/8

I’ll be thinking of my wife, our kids, my siblings, everyone we know & the millions we've admired from afar who went to the Women’s March because women’s rights are human rights, who fought the Muslim Ban...

I'll be thinking of those who saw no very fine people marching with the racists and antisemites in Charlottesville, who believed in science and fighting climate change when those in power rewarded polluters, who decried the separation of families and putting kids in cages...

I'll be thinking of those who responded to attacks on equality by demanding that the civil rights of LGBTQ people in our society must be enshrined in law, who followed the leadership of our young people who marched for their lives to end gun violence...

I'll be thinking of those who honored our healthcare heroes & frontline workers while mourning those lost & the leadership failure that made it worse, who declared that George Floyd’s brutal death must finally lead to meaningful change & racial justice bc Black lives matter...6/8

I'll be thinking of those who know that Joe Biden won the election by 7 million votes and that anyone in the White House or Congress who tried to overturn the election based on lies and conspiracy theories must be held accountable.

I’ll be thinking of all of them. And RBG. And my friend John Lewis. And the America we love under leadership working to bring us together rather than trying to tear us apart.
