On 03 Nov 1947, realizing the gravity of the situation of the Indo-Pak War and Srinagar, Maj Sharma urged his company to fight the enemy tenaciously. With extreme bravery he kept rushing across the open ground to his sections exposing himself to heavy and accurate fire. (2/5)
Maj Sharma's company held on to its position till the last man, last round. The casualties suffered by tribal infiltrators caused them to lose impetus to advance. This bought time for Indian forces to fly into Srinagar airfield and blocked all routes of ingress to Srinagar.(3/5)
His inspiring example resulted in the enemy being delayed for six hours, thus gaining time for reinforcements to get into position. (4/5)
His leadership, gallantry and tenacious defence were such that his men were inspired to fight the enemy by seven to one, six hours even after his martyrdom. The officer has set an example of courage and qualities seldom equalled in the history of the Indian Army.
