"Overall, the NTP findings demonstrate the potential for RFR to cause cancer in humans."
--Linda Birnbaum, former director of @NIEHS and National Toxicology Program in an statement cited in the @saferphones suit v @FCC
Oral arguments are scheduled for next Monday, January 25. They will be streamed live.
One of the key Qs raised by the Court during oral arguments this morning was whether @US_FDA had consulted with its advisory committee, Technical Electronic Product Radiation Safety Standards Committee (TEPRSSC), when responding to @FCC with regard to its rules on #RF safety.
Counsel for the @FCC could not answer.
The answer is surely No.
TEPRSSC has been inactive for years. Its last formal meeting was held in October 2016. #RF safety was not on the agenda. Before that, the committee had last met in 2003.
TEPRSSC has, by statute, 15 members. As of end of 2020, there were 10 vacancies. The terms of all 5 members expired December 31.
So at this point, there are no active members of TEPRSSC.
Among the 5 were: Martha Linet, retired from @theNCI and Antonio Farone of @MotorolaSoluti2
The Court also asked whether @FCC had consulted with the #RF Interagency Advisory Group (RFIAWG). No answer on this too. This is a more informal group. Both FCC and @US_FDA have reps on RFIAWG. It also has been largely inactive.
The Court asked that the @FCC supply information on the status of both TEPRSSC and RFIAWG by 5pm tomorrow, January 26.
In 1999, RFIAWG raised 14 "unresolved" issues related to the @IEEEorg's #RF exposure standard. (@FCC has long relied on IEEE for guidance.) Though the IEEE standard has since been revised, many of those 14 issues are still relevant >20 yr later.

Concern is building in Italy over possible loosening of its #RF exposure standard —one of the strictest in the world— by as much as 100x. In a letter to 🇮🇹 PM Mario Draghi, 29 associations asked that the government maintain its 6 V/m limit.

More pressure on Draghi. Now from prominent #RF researchers who have long promoted #precaution and do not want 🇮🇹 to raise its 6 V/m limit.

The first U.S. animal study of long-term microwave exposure was published in 1962. Like many others that would follow, it pointed to a cancer risk -–and it too was never repeated. ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/docum…

The experiment was by Susan Prausnitz and Prof Charles Susskind @UCBerkeley. Prausnitz later gave up lab work to raise a family. She died on May 20. Susskind died in 2004. In 1976, he joined ERMAC, an influential NIER advisory committee, based at the White House.

299 male mice were exposed to pulsed 9.27 GHz radar radiation, 4.5 min/day for 59 weeks. It was a crude experiment by today’s standards. Their body temperature was raised by an average 3.3°C. Yet, the mice had an increase incidence of “neoplasms of the white [blood] cells.” 3/4
