A short thread about #ItsASin, the new drama serial from Russell T Davies which begins tonight at 9pm on @Channel4.
Hand on heart, I have never been more thrilled or more proud of anything in my career than I am of being a tiny little part of this huge, beautiful, sexy, funny, sad, important, brilliant drama.
#ItsASin is the story of something that boys and girls of my generation lived through, and it’s a story that needs to be told by those of us who were lucky enough to survive. And nobody could tell it better than Russell T Davies.
#ItsASin is Russell’s tribute to the friends he lost. And so it will be for all of us. For me, it honours the memories of Robert K, whose oil burner still comes out every Christmas, and Gary M, whose snowdrops carpet our lawn each January. They’re just opening now.
If that sounds bleak, well, it shouldn’t. Yes, of course, this is the stuff of tragedy; but the genius of Russell T is that he finds the warmth, the humanity, the love, the joy in everything. So #ItsASin is a celebration of those times as well. Because we did have fun in the 80s.
Whether you lived through those years or whether you didn’t, #ItsASin will grab you and it won’t let go. It will have you laughing and punching the air, then it will smash you into tiny little pieces, then it will pick you right up again. I think it’s Russell’s finest work yet.
If you‘re gripped by #ItsASin tonight - and you will be - then you can wait a week for episode 2 on @Channel4 in the old-fashioned way, or you can proceed directly to @All4 and binge on the whole series. I reckon a fair few viewers will be choosing the latter option tonight.
