We have just confirmed that Facebook has disabled the page of the International Youth and Students for Social Equality at the University of Michigan, as well as the accounts of all admins. This is an unprecedented attack on the speech rights of an official campus student group.
THE IYSSE@UM is an officially-sanctioned campus student group since 2007. Its facebook account has been active since 2013. Both its president and campus advisor have had their accounts disabled.
The activities of the IYSSE at UM are widely followed among students. Its meetings often attract 100+ attendees. Its opposition to layoffs in the auto industry and the persecution of Chelsea Manning were reported prominently in student newspapers.
@ggreenwald@mtaibbi@kthalps@MaxBlumenthal Please let your followers know about Facebook has just systematically dismantled the social media presence of an official University of Michigan student group, entirely without explanation, in an act of political censorship.
Due to protests opposing Facebook's purge of the University of Michigan International Youth and Students for Social Equality page, the company has backed down. The UM IYSSE's account has been restored, together with accounts of the admins. Remain vigilant. This fight is not over.
We would like to thank the many journalists and other public figures, together with the thousands of workers and young people, who publicized Facebook's act of censorship against the UM International Youth and Students for Social Equality and helped overturn it.
