TO MY DAUGHTER KIKIOPE AT 10

My adorable daughter,

How time flies! It looked like yesterday when I sat in front of the theatre with Mo Fatokun eagerly anticipating your arrival on that Wednesday. I had butterflies in my stomach even as I tried to look calm outwardly.
My knees were knocking and as I prayed under my breath, I felt sweat dropping from my brows.

My heart beat faster and I felt my hands suddenly become clammy. With every opening of the door, I got up to see what was happening.
As nurses ran helter-skelter, I tried to keep my emotions under control. After waiting for what seemed like centuries, a doctor stepped out to announce the good news of your arrival.
That date remains indelible in my mind. Oh, what a happy day! The bundle of joy we earnestly prayed for had arrived- after over 8 years of waiting. After numerous consultations with various doctors. After visits to several hospitals. After innumerable tests.
After so many laying of hands. After pieces of advice from friends and people who truly mean well. After several inquisitive looks and some queer queries. And against all odds. Now, people will call me Daddy.
Kikiope, you are an answer to prayer. You are proof that God never fails. And for this, your mother and I are irrevocably thankful to God for giving you to us. We accept our role as mere caretakers. We promise to raise you with the fear of the Lord.
I promise to be a role model and a father you will forever be proud of. I promise to be there for you when you need me. I promise to give you my back to ride on. I promise you we will play with sand. I promise I will be there to watch you sing in school.
I promise I will guide you as you make delicate choices in life. I promise to be your mentor and your friend.
The last 365 days have been the best of my life. Watching you wrapped in a little shawl and barely bigger than my palms, it gave me unparalleled joy watching you grow. The flutter of your eyelids brought great pleasure to me.
The way you sucked those breasts made me envy you (chuckle!). Your giggles made me go ga-ga.I couldn’t wait to come home every night to see you and carry you in my arms. Driving home every day from work became so much pleasure, all because of you.
In the early days, you wouldn’t sleep unless you were on my chest. And I wouldn’t sleep unless you had already slept. Your tenderness made me gentle.Your innocence made me simple. Your smile made me bright. Your cries brought tears to my heart.
I was there when your first set of teeth grew, 2 tiny pieces that you kept on trying on my fingers. I was there the first time you tried to sit down. I was there the first time you ate solid food. I was there the first time you crawled on all fours.
I was there the first time you struggled to stand up, holding delicately to my feet and wobbling from side to side. I was there the first time you called ba-ba. Your mum and I competed for your love but I always told her you are Daddy’s girl.
You have my face, my smile, my nose and you sleep just like me. The only difference is- you are a better copy!
Kikiope, your life will continually be a source of praise and worship to God. Oluwanimisokan, God will always have you on His mind. Aridunnu, you will always be a source of joy to many people. Tamilore, God will make you a gift to this generation.
Oluwasinaayomi, doors will open for you. Priscilla, may God give you wisdom of the ancients. Anike, Kings and queens will be your nursing fathers and mothers. Ayobola, wealth will crown your joy. Oluwaseunbabarafunmi, your eyes will behold wonders in the land of the living.
Morireoluwa, you will experience God’s goodness. Temiloluwa Toluwanimi, your life is forever consigned to God. You are His and He is yours.
My greatest height will be your starting point. You are free from everything that limited your forbears. You will never be stranded in life. You will experience peace and you will not know shame. Men and women will help you. The heavens will open over you.
The angels will fight for you. And God will be with you in Jesus’ Name.

I love you so much. And help me thank your mum for being the best mum in the world to 2 babies at the same time - you and I.

Happy birthday.

From the best Daddy in the world.
(I wrote this for her 1st birthday on January 26, 2012. She's 10 today and I've promised to share this every new decade of her life as long as I live. I read it to her yesterday and see the giggles ☺️).

A young guy approached me to mentor him. I agreed. A short while after, he asked me for money. I declined. The next day, I sent him some personal development initiatives. He never responded till date.
I became friends here with a lady. I would later meet her at an event in Abuja. She eulogized me and told me she would love me to mentor her. I told her I don't mentor ladies as a matter of principle. She requested for my personal contact details so she could stay in touch.
I obliged. By the time we concluded the event, she came back to meet me and gave me a funny story about an emergency trip she had to make. Long story short, she asked for money. I declined. I was shocked at her audacity. Thereafter, I noticed her negative remarks on my posts.

HOW TO CREATE YOUR WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS

Dear Team,

It's been my first week with the team and what a week it has been. We had a fantastic strategy session and people gave commitments with boldness. And some are making it good already.
But quite a number are nowhere near their commitments. Fortunately, there is still one more week to go. What is the value of one week? What can be done in one week?
In one week, God created the heaven and the earth and all that is in it- including man. That's huge. The stars, the moon, the sun, trees, all animals, the various type of fishes, flora and fauna in one week and even took a day off to rest. How did He do it? I think I have an idea

The Law of the Value Chain

I was at a courier company on Saturday to send out a parcel to Abuja. This courier company actually started out as a transport company with buses going to different destinations in Nigeria.
Overtime, people sent parcels through the drivers to different destinations. The company saw an opportunity and started a courier and logistics company.
As the very courteous staff of the courier company attended to me, I saw her bring out different cartons to pack the items I was sending out. Several parcels were everywhere packed in those cartons.

Fighting Ourselves When We Should Be Fighting Them

In support of Jimi Agbaje during the 2015 elections, I produced 2 jingles as my contribution. I wanted him to win.
So, through the assistance of a friend of mine who is a PDP stalwart, we were directed to handover the CDs to a PDP Chieftain in Lagos. The PDP Chieftain asked us to meet him at a club house around Palmgrove. It was a Sunday evening.
When we arrived, we passed through security checks. The club house was guarded by mobile policemen. On entering, the PDP Chieftain was seated with company. Right opposite him was a friend with company also. All of them were having drinks.

Travelogue: The Belgian Monument For The 10 Commandos in Rwanda

One of the monuments I visited was the Belgian Monument for the 10 Belgian United Nations peacekeepers.

In April 1994, 10 Commandos of Belgian origin were ambushed during the Rwandan War.
It was a day after the Rwandan president’s plane was shot down on April 6, 1994. They surrendered their weapons in exchange for the promise to allow them to go to the UN Base.
The Hutu militia however took them to a military camp where over 100 soldiers attacked them. The brave Belgian Commandos had smuggled 2 small arms and with that resisted for many hours while waiting for help which never came.

Travelogue: Hotel Rwanda, Paul Kagame and A Purpose Driven Nation

Do You Remember Hotel Rwanda? Hotel Rwanda was a film released in 2004 about how Paul Rusesabagina (played by Don Cheadle ), the manager of Hotel Des Milles Collines, saved 1,268 Tutsis during the 1994 Genocide.
The hotel was also shown in the 2005 film Sometime In April.

I was at the hotel. The actual name of the hotel is Hotel des Mille Collines. The hotel was rebuilt after the war and still remains a melting point of sorts.
Behind me in one of the pictures is the swimming pool that the Tutsis who took refuge in the hotel were forced to drink because there was no water. As I went round the hotel, I played that movie Hotel Rwanda in my head. From the faces I saw at the hotel, the country has healed.
