Worth pointing out that #LifelongLinks is needed now more than ever because so many children and young people in care are being sent to live many miles from their birth families and other significant people in their lives.
More than 60% of children and young people in children's homes are living at distance from their families; many are hundreds of miles away and have moved town multiple times.
I don't know what the equivalent number is for foster care, but I do know that more children are being moved further away as local authorities become more dependent on private agencies to find foster homes.
FWIW, as a foster family we only care for children who are local to us, and make a strong commitment to maintain their local connections, including extended birth families.
As a result, we have built strong relationships and remain close to a number of parents and grandparents, who we now consider to be part of our own extended family.
