I’m super excited about the new chapter emerging in our research on a programmable cloud. This is what comes after serverless, people.

In this thread, a few recent talks/papers on the vision. First off — 10 minute pitch from CIDR is here.
The full CIDR paper, “New Directions in Cloud Programming”, is here. This is joint with @siobhcroo @alvinkcheung and @mbpmilano. cidrdb.org/cidr2021/paper…

@siobhcroo @alvinkcheung @mbpmilano Next, I gave a keynote at #POPL last week going over the foundations of this work. Super appreciative to that community for the opportunity. It's an hour talk, posted here: /3
That talk goes over a wide range of work from the likes of @palvaro Tom Ameloot @pbailis David Chu Tyson Condie @neil_conway @boonthauloo and many others, inspired by folks like David Maier, Alan Fekete, @PatHelland, @headinthebox, James Hamilton, @RasBodik @alighodsi /4
Phil Levis, Petros Maniatis, Mothy Roscoe, @raghurwi, Ion Stoica, Scott Shenker, @fneven Jan Van den Bussche… others too!

Oh geez I left out @billmarczak from the list of main contributors! /5
ICYMI, I have a review of our most recent related serverless work from @ucbrise in a blog post here medium.com/riselab/the-st…. The research effort is starting to look beyond serverless functions now to cloud programming more broadly. /6
Last, this is all happening under the Hydro project umbrella. We’re trying to keep things up to date at hydro-project.github.io — watch that space.

Thanks to all our collaborators, past, present and incoming!

And special thanks go to the supporters of this research who sponsor the #RISELab @ucbrise: rise.cs.berkeley.edu/sponsors/
