The "food basket of the nationβ has indeed become empty. Those who have been around long enough will not agree any less. Those who were there in 80s and 90s.
So over the holidays I had a course to visit some rural areas around Benue
βthe food basket of the nationβ. As we drove by, I could see un-nourished stands of Sorghum crop left after harvest of probably Soybeans or Yams. What caught my attention was the dwarf nature of the Sorghum crops due to lack of nutrients and the sparse population of the stands.
Am not going to go into why this is like this.
Again, during the harvest of Yams in December and January, I saw on social media when y'all displayed your plenteous harvest, or so you taught. But from the few farmers I talked to that harvested Yams, all said that the yield was
not so well as before. Why?
I won't even want to talk about the next level of postharvest losses experienced with fruits and vegetables.
I have reminded us of the above to say what I have said before that the Basket is now empty. What are we doing about it?
For those who are trying to better agriculture, increase farmer's yield and income, believe us when we say the Benue Basket is indeed empty. Continues milking of this empty Basket and celebrating that you are the food basket of the nation will not help anyone if
nothing drastic is done to turn this tilde around. Please do not be deceived, you are not near on the list of States feeding this nation. Your basket is empty.
Worst of all you keep refusing to learn new things. To adopt modern farming practices, insisting your parents have been
doing this long before we were born, so I ask: what is the result of over generational practices. All I can see is low yield, diseased crops and poverty.

These solutions are all around us. We have people with solutions living among us.
1. Reprioritize Agriculture and stop the mouth to lips attention been given. Be serious and more determined. Invest in the real people who really needs it and not hijackers of any farming funds.
2. Please change your seeds. Change your seeds. I have written about this on yam here (facebook.com/mosee.anzenge/β¦) am not going to go over it here. Change your yam seeds, they are old, tired and diseased.
3. The lands have all depleted of nutrients therefore embrace more
appropriate fertilizer application on all your crops.
4. This is to government, stop choosing Agriculture as a hill to die on (@EletaValentine has constantly talked about this). Stop preaching go back to farm without availing proper environment.
Provide full mechanization equipment to encourage the youth to farm.
5. Also to government, I have once suggested creation of an Innovation hub with a 100 million to fund ideas (facebook.com/mosee.anzenge/β¦), you will be surprised what our youth can come up with if there is funding.
