What this pandemic has laid bare is that schools cannot fix problems that are societal, systemic, & endemic. It’s so easy yet so callous to demand “schools must open...for the learning, mental health, nutrition, childcare... so people can go back to work.” Schools are not a
panacea & if you want them to be, fund them that way. Grant educators the respect & professional courtesy to work with & on behalf of the children they have dedicated their lives to. But the learning, they’re falling behind in learning - compared to when & to whom; are you using
data from other global pandemics? But what about urban & rural largely BIPOC? When have these children ever been your priority? Was it when they weren’t food insecure, all had health care, lived in neighborhoods w/decent quality air, or no lead pipes, or when jobs that pay a
living wage were readily available to their parents? Maybe it was when families had affordable childcare, school buildings that were well-ventilated, bright, filled w/play spaces, new tech, & teachers who weren’t exhausted, demoralized, & terrified of dying from COVID on their
students’ behalf. We love our students. We want to be with, care for, & teach our students. If you want the best for all America’s children, then act that way. Clean water, clean air, nutrition, healthcare, living wage for all, funded mental healthcare, respect for & support
for public schools & educators. A dear friend & school secretary died in November due to COVID. Her district cowed to pressure to open schools despite science & humanity. If you truly care about America’s children, act like it, damn it. @AOC@SenSanders#NEA#CEA#TaxTheRich
