Hi it’s Julie! It’s a wonderful Monday and we have another video for #IZWCC2021 this time from @ecotonID Sharing the Burden: Collaboration Towards Gresik Zero Waste Cities. Link to video: #Go4ZeroWaste#breakfreefromplastic [1/9]
Like many cities in Indonesia, Gresik City has only enough resources to provide adequate management services to less than 50% of the population. #IZWCC2021 [2/9]
Gresik is a coastal city in East Java, Indonesia, located downstream between Brantas River and Bengawan Solo River. Many end up relying on informal waste collection and indiscriminate dumping to rid of household waste. #IZWCC2021 [3/9]
To make the waste situation worse, the congested Ngipik landfill was projected to reach full capacity this year 2021. #IZWCC2021 [4/9]
To address this serious concern, ECOTON piloted the Zero Waste Cities program in Wringinanom Village which aims to divert resources from Ngipik landfill and Brantas and Bengawan Solo Rivers and nearby coasts. #IZWCC2021 [5/9]
The shared responsibility of the community in Zero Waste is to handle waste from household to the Materials Recovery Facility in their locality. #IZWCC2021 [6/9]
The municipal government then will only need to transport residual waste to extend the landfill service lifetime and continue to monitor and educate about waste leakage in the important bodies of water of Gresik. #IZWCC2021 [7/9]
Gresik found Zero Waste as the solution to their waste problem. And they will need the participation of everyone down to the household level. And we’re sure they’ll get there as ZW can only mean savings, empowerment, and health to cities! #IZWCC2021 [8/9]
This Wednesday is another #IZWCC2021 day as @PPLH_Bali takes us to Denpasar 🇮🇩 to see how households are making a HUGE impact in diverting waste from landfills and keeping incinerators out! Link to video: #Go4ZeroWaste#breakfreefromplastic [1/7]
“Take the easiest steps that won’t create future disasters.”
- Dr. Ir. Ni Luh Kartini, Udayana University
Zero Waste system in Denpasar is the sustainable solution rather than costly and harmful incineration that would just create new problems. #BurnNot#IZWCC2021 [2/7]
In Denpasar, managing household waste can help ensure organic discards, which comprise 70% of waste, aren't buried in landfills. This will help the government focus on the remaining 30% - inorganic & residual waste - through waste reduction programs & policies. #IZWCC2021 [3/7]
Malabon is a highly-urbanized city that’s prone to floods due to its flat terrain & proximity to heavily-silted river systems. The city has invested in drainage systems & pumping stations but waste clogging these facilities have negated flood mitigation efforts. #IZWCC2021 [2/9]
Malabon started its #ZeroWasteCities program 6 years ago in Potrero, the most populous barangay with 54,000 residents. The city has since expanded the program to all 27 barangays. #IZWCC2021 [3/9]
