BREAKING: Residents in two parts of Woking, Surrey to be offered COVID tests after two people with no travel links tested positive for the variant discovered in South Africa.
Ruth Hutchinson, Director of Public Health for Surrey, said: “This is a precautionary measure - the more cases of the variant we find, the better chance we have at stopping it from spreading further."
A total of 105 cases have now been discovered of the South Africa variant in the UK, says Surrey Local Resilience Forum.
Affected areas to get surge testing are Goldsworth Park and St John's - with hope to roll it out to Egham in coming days.

PM Boris Johnson doesn't seem too concerned about South Africa variant.

He says in a pool clip this afternoon: "We're confident that all the vaccines we're using provide a high degree of immunity and protection against all variants."
PM Boris Johnson: "The interesting and exiting thing about... the vaccines we're developing is increasingly, they're capable of being adapted to deal with new variants as they arise.

"The fact is we're going to be living with COVID for a while to come in one way or another."
New details just out on bid to combat SA variant community transmission:

PCR tests will be posted through people's letterboxes in some Surrey areas- starting today.

A team of officials will return later to collect samples and send them to a lab to check if variant is present.
Looks like more community transmission of the South Africa variant found in Ealing.

The west London council says a person in the area tested positive for the SA variant but "had not travelled to South Africa or been in contact with anyone who had links to South Africa".
Door-to-door testing for SA variant in Kent too:

Households in ME15 postcode will be visited by Kent Police, council officials and Kent Fire and Rescue - they will knock on doors and ask everyone aged 16 and over "to carry out a PCR test there and then".

This is coming a little late, as I'm trying to stay off Twitter on non-work days...

2020 was rubbish, particularly as someone who loves meeting new people and spending all hours of the day in a pub.

But I did some pieces I'm proud of and wanted to share:
My biggest highlight was getting to cover the US election from Washington DC.

Just before polling day, I went to find people whose friends and relatives had died of COVID-19.

I'll never forget their stories or anger at the White House administration.

Closer to home, I also uncovered that useless coronavirus tests were being sent out, with recipients told to bin the kits because they weren't able to be returned and processed.

They were still included in the government's testing total.
