Happy Black History Month. I am going to celebrate the month by highlighting the contributions of Black psychology and Black psychologists.
I remember reading Dr. Harriette Pipes McAdoo's work early in my career as a Black Studies and Psychology scholar. Her strengths-based approach to Black families and children helped shape a field.
Every person receiving a degree in psychology should have read Even the Rat Was White at least once. Dr. Guthrie covers eugenics, psychometric scientism, psychology of race(ism), and early Black psychologists. #BlackHistoryMonth
Dr. Margaret Beale Spencer's influential PVEST model is an excellent example of a strengths-based theory to examine the resilience and positive development of Black youth and their families. #BlackHistoryMonth
Beloved ancestor Dr. Robert L. Williams, II helped to shape the development of a strengths-based Black Psychology. He coined the term Ebonics and was a co-founder of @TheABPsi. I was fortunate to spend some time with him when I was at MU - an amazing human! #BlackHistoryMonth
Happy 81st Birthday Dr. William E. Cross, Jr (2/6/40)! Lots to celebrate, including the 50th anniversary of his 1971 Black World publication where he introduced the nigrescence Black racial identity model that changed the way we study social identities. #BlackHistoryMonth
Dr. Janet Helms is the GOAT in counseling psychology. She developed a model of White racial identity in the 1980s before it was fashionable. Please read her work. Throughout her career she has challenged anti-Blackness & racism, and fought for equity. #BlackHistoryMonth
Dr. Linda James Myers deserves her flowers. She is a past president of the Association of Black Psychologists. She developed Optimal Theory, an African-centered, culturally grounded theory of human development. And she co-hosts Creating Zola Mondays. @TheABPsi
Thanks @dranjela and @CCHPsych for sharing the new 10 minute documentary on Dr Robert Guthrie. I will show this in my African American Psych class. I hope this is shown in all intro and history of psych classes
Oops. It’s closer to 12 minutes 😊
Dr. Beverly Greene's applied writing is deeply nuanced; her work is among the first in psychology to center African American queer womxn's voices. She was gracious enough to keynote a Psychology of Black Women symposium that I organized at MU in 1993/94 #BlackHistoryMonth
Dr. James S. Jackson literally changed the study of Black Americans through his research, leadership, and mentoring. He gave so much to the fields of psychology and Black psychology. Most people don't know he was the 5th president of @TheABPsi. @PRBA_ISR#BlackHistoryMonth
Dr. Thomas Parham has made significant contributions to Black Psychology and counseling psychology through his research, mentorship, and leadership. He is a @TheABPsi past president. He is the current President of Cal State Univ Dominguez Hills. @CSUDHPrezParham
Religion and spirituality are anchors for many African American families and communities. Dr. Jacqueline Mattis has complicated these related constructs in the psychology literature. I return to her work time and again when I teach African American psychology. #BlackHistoryMonth
