People who quote Trotsky or Lenin at me to try and prove themselves right hold the same amount of weight as people who quote Bible verses at me to try and prove themselves right. They're experienced as the exact same behavior, and I'm sure many others experience it this way too.
If you can't clearly and concisely promote your position in your own words, it's because you don't understand your own position. Don't quote the dead words of dead men at people, gain a better understanding.
You would never at any time see me quoting some "new age" person to try and prove myself right. That wouldn't be argumentation, it would be Bible-thumping.

There's nothing wrong with using quotes (I use them all the time), but doing it as a "Well this dead guy said X so you're wrong, checkmate" is bullshit.
Citing someone as an unquestionable authority to win an argument only works if the other party agrees that they are an unquestionable authority. Most normal people you interact with won't hold that view.
