finished 13 Sentinels earlier tonight. i don't have too much to say, but here's some
1. the prologue is the worst part of the game. if you can stomach the unfortunate anime balloon tiddies, naked girl in robot, and transphobic framing of an nb character, it gets better
2. the game is visually, mechanically, and musically stunning. it's gorgeous and well-made. if you want visual appeal and fun ludonarrative integration using technology as the conceptual axis, this is a winner. a la Nier Automata in nature
3. if you enjoy high concept science fiction, you will enjoy this game. it has a similar effect to games like VLR in that its initially narrow scope begins to gradually Expand into something greater than you could ever have known. very cool. that said,
4. this game definitely is more invested in explaining the science than it is invested in its characters; that's not inherently bad! but it does mean that the story is framed with a greater focus on the hard scifi than the personalities and psyches of the characters themselves
VLR to me is an example of both--extremely high stakes and high concept premise/scifi, while still being VERY grounded in the psychology and feelings and relationships between characters. AiTSF comes close as well, but is ultimately more insular in scope
5. this is a personal feeling that you may not share--that said, i found that many of the finer details and elements of the larger scifi structures they set up were too convoluted for their own good. and i say this as someone who loves zero escape,
i state that mostly to say "i'm not stupid or dismissing the game for being complex, it just absolutely overloads you with information and it could be delivered with more clarity". this is a risk involved with nonlinear narratives, but not always inherent
6. the lgbt rep is small compared to the majority of the cast (of course), but ultimately i found it charming and sincere. there's iffy language and framing around the characters in question, but the intent scans as overall positive.
7. the ending is sweet and ties it all together. i felt like they stuck the landing. that said, there are some crucial details that are just sort of left out entirely. maybe in scanning the mystery files you'll find them, but don't expect Every thread to lead somewhere
8. all in all, i want more games to be as ambitious as this one--i want large scopes, impossibly weird scifi, beautiful design, radical ideas. setting my preferences aside, it's fantastic.
my own preference favors a more intimate cast and more mental/psyche gymnastics
i could also do without the very bleh fanservicey elements that exist here and there, but i can accept that those things won't go away (unfortunately). what i dont understand is that this is an inherently niche game, so why...... do that. it sold 300k copies worldwide
so i dont really understand the Necessity of tired anime boobie if it wont increase sales- whatever. that is a different conversation gresbhdrfngh
ALL THIS SAID. 13 Sentinels is an extremely unique game with some fascinating scifi concepts. if all this sounds good, go for it
thinking more about the lgbt rep in 13 Sentinels now that i'm 80% through the story
while i was bracing for the worst after hijiyama's prologue, the more i realize that the initially uncomfortable framing of the nonbinary character's transness is intentional--
--in that it's meant to draw in players who might be dated and prejudiced in their thinking, like a certain someone who grew up in 1940s japan. i won't say more as not to spoil pieces of the game, but the way hijiyama reacts to and ultimately comes to love this character
is really touching. the character also states outright two things that really felt sincere to me
- "some binaries work for me, and others don't" (a cute programmer joke and also a direct I Am Nonbinary)
- "you had a crush on me before, so why does it matter now?" (paraphrased)
i cant lie. im going to be really bummed when shb is over and the first is no longer relevant/narratively reachable... they did such a good job with it that i like it there way more than the source, and idk how theyre gonna fix that. so much of it looks drab and janky bc old
i think whats disappointing is that. this game is so ugga lee bc the style they go for is only pretty in HD 4K See Every Hair On Character Nipple Graphics. but that is not accessible in a way that an mmo needs to be for ppl to play it, so they had to dial it back
this is part of my larger gripe abt games as a whole spending too much on textures and too little on having a unique style that will not age like Milk and looks more interesting... ff goes for semi-realism, which falls into that trap. the only kind of graphical realism i like--
couldnt sleep so i spent the past hour or two writing translyrics for a song i love
i dont read jpn but i do like comparing diff literal translations online and channeling that into music. it's so hard to match the syllables, timing, And meaning. only 3 verses
[brackets] are for words/phrases i dont really like and might swap out
heres the song, listen to it it"s beautiful genuinely. and if u are fluent u can tell me how bad i ruined it. ODYIRA6F0IDT open.spotify.com/track/73yuLsmY…
a lot of it for me too is about listening to and considering the song as a Whole , thematically... sometimes u cant fit exact meaning into the correct lines, so i like to sprinkle the words/ideas throughout to capture the emotional core of the music, how it Feels
kouchou's character arc is so deeply about neurodivergence; im not sure i can really convey that well in ffxiv rp. but the Thesis he proves by existing is that even if youre predisposed to violence/cruelty, it doesnt need to become you. you can still be a good and happy person
his brain functions in such a way that being kind doesnt come naturally to him. but with true understanding from his peers and a willingness to try, he ultimately becomes a powerful ally and even better friend, despite his many losses. that is important to me
most fiction tends to misrepresent people who lack cognitive empathy; i think it's important to counteract that with positive examples of characters who, despite their difference in thinking and function, can succeed in life and have fulfilling relationships with others
