1. Among Houston-area @Kroger workers, there have been 347 COVID cases — and 2 deaths — since December 28

Despite record profits, Kroger canceled its $2/hour hazard pay in May

It's much more hazardous for workers now, but Kroger refuses to bring it back

@kroger 2. @Kroger has been enjoying record profits: $2.9 BILLION over the first 3 quarters of 2020. That's $1.2 BILLION IN EXTRA PROFITS compared to the first 3 quarters of 2019.

So how is Kroger spending this windfall?

popular.info/p/an-outbreak-…
3. In September, @Kroger announced it would spend $1 billion in stock buybacks. This will increase the stock price in the short term, increasing compensation for corporate executive that are paid in stock grants and options.

popular.info/p/an-outbreak-…
4. On Friday, @Kroger announced a new 18 cents/share dividend, which will transfer about $147 million to investors (and also enhance its stock price).

Meanwhile, workers who are putting their lives at risk get nothing.

popular.info/p/an-outbreak-…
5. How opposed is @Kroger to seeing its employees get paid a bit more?

Long Beach City passed an ordinance requiring large grocery stores to pay workers a bonus of $4/hour for 120 days

Kroger responded by PERMINENTLY CLOSING its two stores in the city

popular.info/p/an-outbreak-…
6. This wasn't a coincidence. @Kroger confirmed it closed the stores as "a result of the City of Long Beach’s decision to pass an ordinance mandating extra pay for grocery workers."

7. @Kroger and other large retailers are treating their workers this way because they think people don't care.

Or if they do care, they'll forget soon.

Florida @GovRonDeSantis doesn't want to address his state's 2.7B budget shortfall or raging pandemic so he's introducing legislation to fine social media companies $100,000 a day if they ban politicians who use their platforms to encourage violence

popular.info/p/desantis-big…
@GovRonDeSantis The premise of DeSantis proposed legislation is that Facebook, Twitter and other social media companies are biased against conservatives

This is a point made again and again and again

It's a lie.

popular.info/p/desantis-big…
The legislation is pitched as an effort to protect free speech but actually violates the First Amendment. The government can't force companies to print political speech. Forced speech is just as much of a free speech violation of preventing speech.

1. GOP Senators have embraced the idea that convicting Trump is unconstitutional because he's not president.

It's at the center of the document filed by Trump's lawyers yesterday.

And it's worth going through in detail.

Because it makes no sense.

2. The argument from Trump's lawyers hinges on this language from the Constitution: "[j]udgment in cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor…"

3. Trump's lawyers argue that the key word is AND.

They argue that because the constitution says punishments are limited to removal AND disqualification it means you have to be removed before you can be disqualified

They call it a "condition precedent"

1. Extraordinary story in the @WSJ about how Congressional offices are reacting to corporate PACs cutting off donations.

Didn't think people would say this stuff out loud.

@WSJ 2. Republican and Democratic lawmakers tell the WSJ that they will not help corporations water down or kill progressive legislation unless the money starts flowing again!
@WSJ 3. Republican members of Congress are considering banning corporate lobbyists from their offices, presumably unless they start writing checks again

Publix says they don't control Fancelli

But Publix does control their own cash

So we followed the money

Follow along if interested

@Publix 2. Florida @GovRonDeSantis helped lay the foundation for the riot beginning in November. He encouraged people in PA and MI to contact their state reps and demand they throw away millions of votes.

@Publix then donated $1 MILLION to DeSantis in December

Schoen lost Stone's case. Trump then pardoned Stone.
Schoen seems like an interesting guy.
